How to get to Astrakhan
Astrakhan is a city where the Volga meets the Caspian Sea, and Russian hospitality blends with oriental flair. People come here for the famous watermelons, incredible fishing, and views of the white-stone Kremlin. To ensure your journey starts comfortably, it's worth planning your logistics in advance.
If you are planning a trip from the capitals, the easiest way is to buy plane tickets to Astrakhan – this will save you almost a day of travel. Convenient flights are also available for residents of northern regions: tickets to Astrakhan are in demand all year round, especially during the lotus blooming season.

By plane
Boris Kustodiev Airport receives flights from major Russian airlines. This is the most logical way to get to the Volga delta without losing time on the road.
: the flight will take about 2 hours 30 minutes. Flights operate daily from Sheremetyevo, Domodedovo, and Vnukovo.
: direct flights will get you to your destination in approximately 3 hours 20 minutes. If there are no direct flights for your desired dates, you can always find convenient connections via Moscow.
Transfer: the airport is only 8 kilometers from the city center. You can get to the city by taxi or marshrutka (minibus) (№ 5, 80, 86).
By train
If you don't like flying or prefer a leisurely immersion in changing landscapes, choose the train. The journey will take you through steppe expanses, which in itself sets the right mood.
Branded train "Lotos": operates between Moscow and Astrakhan. The journey time will be just over a day. The comfort level in such carriages is traditionally higher: there are bio-toilets and air conditioning, which is critically important for a southern destination.
Other trains: trains from Volgograd, Makhachkala, and Nizhny Novgorod pass through Astrakhan. Remember that it's best to book tickets for the summer period well in advance.
By bus
An option for those accustomed to long journeys or seeking maximum savings. Bus services connect Astrakhan with many cities in the south and central parts of Russia.
Routes:direct flights regularly depart bus stations (for example, "Salaryevo" or "Yuzhnye Vorota").
Travel time: be prepared to spend 18 to 22 hours in your seat.
Tip: choose flights that arrive in Astrakhan in the morning so you have a full day for check-in and your first exploration of the city.
By car
A trip in your own car is an option for those who want freedom and plan to stop by Volgograd or Sarai-Batu (a reconstruction of the Golden Horde capital) along the way.
Route: the main highway is M-6 "Caspian". The road is generally in good condition, but can be narrow in places.
Distance:to Astrakhan is approximately 1,400 kilometers. Experienced drivers cover this distance in one day, but it's better to make an overnight stop.
Nuance: be prepared for the heat. In summer, temperatures in the Astrakhan region can rise above 40°C, so a working air conditioner in the car is not a luxury, but a vital necessity. Also, monitor your fuel level: as you approach the Volga delta, distances between branded gas stations can increase.
Astrakhan awaits you. Choose a convenient mode of transport, pack your bags, and get ready to taste real black caviar and admire sunsets over the great river.
