Baggage

VietJet Air baggage rules depend on the selected fare, so it is important to review them before arriving at the airport. Eco fares typically only include carry-on baggage, while Deluxe and SkyBoss passengers receive enhanced checked baggage allowances.

Carry-on Baggage: The standard allowance for one passenger is 1 piece weighing up to 7 kg. The bag's dimensions must not exceed 56 x 36 x 23 cm. Additionally, passengers are allowed to bring a small personal item (handbag, laptop, or Duty-Free bag) with total dimensions not exceeding 30 x 20 x 10 cm. It is important to remember that sharp objects and liquids in containers larger than 100 ml are prohibited in the cabin.

Checked Baggage: If your fare does not include baggage, it can be purchased separately. Standard weight packages start at 15 kg and can go up to 40 kg per person. SkyBoss fares come with privileges—usually up to 30-50 kg of included baggage. The maximum weight of a single piece must not exceed 32 kg for the safety of airport staff.

Excess Baggage: If your suitcase exceeds the paid allowance, you will have to pay high rates for every extra kilogram at the airport. It is recommended to purchase additional weight in advance through the airline's website or app—this can be 2-3 times cheaper than at the check-in counter.

Special Items: VietJet Air transports sports equipment (golf clubs, surfboards) and musical instruments, provided they are properly packed and the appropriate fee is paid. Strollers and wheelchairs are usually transported free of charge but must be checked in at the boarding gate or check-in desk.

Packing Tips: To avoid misunderstandings, use bright tags and secure locks. Ensure there are no prohibited items in your checked baggage: portable chargers (Power Banks), electronic cigarettes, and lithium batteries—these items are strictly forbidden in checked baggage and must be carried in your carry-on only.

Pet Rules

VietJet Air Pet Travel Rules

VietJet Air (VJ) provides limited pet transportation services, and rules may vary significantly depending on the flight type and the laws of the destination country. In most cases, pets are transported as checked baggage or through the airline's cargo division.

In-Cabin Transportation

  • General Rules: On most scheduled VietJet Air flights, pets are not permitted in the passenger cabin.
  • Exceptions: An exception may be made only for certified service dogs accompanying passengers with disabilities, provided all supporting documentation is available.

Transportation as Checked Baggage or Cargo

  • Container Requirements: The animal must be in a sturdy, ventilated, and waterproof container that meets IATA standards. The size of the carrier must allow the animal to stand, turn, and lie down in a natural position.
  • Weight Restrictions: The maximum weight of the pet including the container is usually limited by baggage hold restrictions (often up to 32 kg; heavier animals must go via cargo).
  • Conditions: The owner is responsible for providing sufficient food and water for the duration of the flight.

Required Documents

  • A valid international veterinary passport.
  • A health certificate and vaccination records (including the mandatory rabies vaccination).
  • Import/export/transit permits from the government authorities of the relevant countries.

Costs and Booking

  • The pet transportation service is always paid and is not included in the free baggage allowance. Rates depend on the animal's weight and the route.
  • A request for pet transportation must be sent at least 24-48 hours before departure, as the number of pet spaces on board is limited.

Restrictions

  • Breeds: Brachycephalic (flat-faced) breeds of dogs and cats, such as pugs, bulldogs, or Persian cats, may not be accepted for carriage due to the risk of respiratory issues at high altitudes.
  • Temperature Conditions: The airline may refuse transportation in the baggage hold during periods of extreme heat or cold to ensure the safety of the pet.

We strongly recommend contacting the VietJet Air contact center or visiting an official sales office in advance to clarify the current rules for your specific route, as requirements are subject to change.

The primary and most popular is Economy Class (Eco), which provides an affordable seat and allows the traveler to independently choose additional services for a separate fee. For those seeking more flexibility, the Deluxe fare is available, including the ability to change departure dates and free checked baggage.

The airline's most exclusive offerings are SkyBoss and the updated SkyBoss Business. Passengers in these categories enjoy a wide range of privileges: from priority check-in and access to luxury lounges to flying in leather seats with extra legroom. On board, they can expect an expanded menu of hot meals and drinks, as well as priority service at all stages of the journey.

On-Board Amenities: The VietJet Air fleet consists of modern Airbus aircraft with a standard 3-3 seating configuration. Despite the low-cost model, the seat pitch is maintained at a level that ensures comfort on short and medium-haul flights. While an entertainment system is absent on most aircraft, the airline offers an in-flight magazine and the option to purchase Wi-Fi access on some newer planes. On-board catering is available via a Buy-on-Board menu featuring popular Vietnamese dishes such as noodles or rice with meat, as well as light snacks and coffee.

Special Services: The carrier pays special attention to the comfort of all categories of travelers. For families with children, services for heating baby food are provided, and special kits for young passengers can be ordered on some flights. Assistance at the airport and special boarding equipment are provided for people with disabilities. VietJet Air also offers an unaccompanied minor service for children traveling without parents, subject to prior booking and compliance with the airline's rules.

Booking Tips

To book VietJet Air tickets at the best prices, it is recommended to start your search 2–3 months before your intended departure date. The airline frequently runs massive "0 VND" sales (excluding taxes and fees), which typically launch mid-week. The best time to buy is Tuesday or Wednesday, when fare grids are updated and promotional offers appear.

Actively use the VietJet Air mobile app. It often features exclusive promo codes and discounts not available on the official website. Additionally, the app allows you to receive timely notifications about schedule changes and your flight status. Be sure to subscribe to the newsletter or the company's official social media pages so you don't miss seasonal promotions tied to holidays.

Online check-in opens 24 hours and closes 1 hour before departure. We strongly recommend checking in online in advance—this allows you to avoid long queues at the airport and, in some cases, select a standard seat for free (if provided by your fare). For Eco fares, selecting a specific seat is usually a paid service, so if it is important for you to sit by the window or next to a travel companion, it is better to pay for this service in advance during the booking stage.

When booking your ticket, pay attention to additional services: insurance, meals, and baggage. Purchasing baggage and selecting an on-board meal online is always significantly cheaper than paying for these services at the airport. Regarding insurance, VietJet Air offers its own policies covering flight delays and medical expenses, but it is always useful to compare them with your own insurance provider's offers for optimal coverage.

History

The history of VietJet Air began in 2007 when it became the first private airline to receive a license to fly in Vietnam. The founder and visionary behind the business was Nguyen Thi Phuong Thao, who subsequently became Vietnam's first self-made female billionaire. Despite receiving the license, the first commercial flight did not take place until December 2011, connecting Ho Chi Minh City and Hanoi.

From the very start, the airline chose an aggressive growth strategy and vibrant marketing, which allowed it to compete with the state carrier in a very short time. A significant milestone in its history was the fleet expansion through large-scale contracts with Airbus. Just a few years after launch, VietJet Air (IATA: VJ) began rapidly exploring the international market, opening flights to Bangkok, Seoul, and Singapore, marking the company's entry into the pan-Asian arena.

The development of the airline's fleet is impressive in its speed: from a few leased Airbus A320 aircraft in 2011 to more than a hundred modern liners today. A landmark event was the order of a large batch of Boeing 737 MAX aircraft, underscoring the carrier's ambitions to become a global player. VietJet Air constantly updates its fleet, focusing on fuel efficiency and environmentally friendly flights.

The current stage of the company's development is linked to the implementation of innovative digital technologies and sustainability programs. In recent years, VietJet Air has actively expanded its flight geography, launching direct flights to Australia and India, which was a real breakthrough for a low-cost carrier. Today, the company continues to transform Vietnam's aviation market, emphasizing "SkyBoss" services and improving the quality of passenger service worldwide.
