Monument to Duc de Richelieu

It's hard to imagine the city of Odessa without its most recognizable symbol — the Monument to Duc de Richelieu. The famous sculptor Ivan Petrovich Martos, author of the monument to Minin and Pozharsky, was invited to realize the project. The bronze figure was cast in St. Petersburg under the direction of master V. Ekimov. The grand opening took place in the spring of 1828. That day, the square was decorated with flags of various countries, highlighting the international scale of de Richelieu's contributions to the development of the port city.

Duke Emmanuel de Richelieu himself did an incredible amount for the city: under his rule, schools, gymnasiums, and even the city's first theater were built. He transformed a small port into a thriving trade center, for which the people of Odessa still affectionately call him "our Duke."
