In 1925, the institution took its next step: a zoological department was opened, and it received a new name — the Aquarium-Zoo Garden. During this time, its collection was expanded with large animals brought from the famous Askania-Nova reserve: bison, camels, deer, and ostriches.

The modern stage of the zoo's life began in 1978, when it moved to a new, much more spacious territory, where it is still located today — next to the Central Bus Station. This move opened up broad opportunities for further development, the construction of spacious enclosures, and the expansion of the collection, allowing the zoo to become one of the largest and best not only in Ukraine but in Europe.
