Here, you can walk along "toy" streets, look into houses that have preserved their decor since filming, and meet your favorite characters.

This place is ideal for a family holiday. Various shows, performances, and interactive games are held for guests. During the warmer months, you can enjoy water activities in the bay's crystal-clear waters, including inflatable slides and trampolines, or take a short boat trip around the bay. What to Do

The main activity at Popeye Village is exploring the film set itself, now turned into an open-air museum. Visitors can freely wander the streets of the fictional town of Sweethaven and look inside 19 authentic wooden houses. These include not only residential buildings but also public ones, such as the post office, bakery, and fire station, allowing for complete immersion in the atmosphere. The entire village was meticulously recreated based on drawings by cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar, the author of the original Popeye comics.

In addition to walking, the complex offers plenty of entertainment for all ages. Guests can take photos against the backdrop of colorful houses, enjoy magnificent views of Anchor Bay, and learn more about the history of the "Popeye" film. One of the buildings houses a cinema that shows a documentary about the village's construction, as well as the musical itself. For active recreation, there is mini-golf, and for the little ones, there are play areas. Furthermore, various shows and performances take place throughout the day featuring animators in costumes of the main characters, with whom you can chat and take commemorative photos.

Getting There

Getting to Popeye Village, located on the northwest coast of Malta, is quite simple. This unique park is situated in the secluded Anchor Bay, just a few kilometers from the popular resort town of Mellieha. Thanks to the island's well-developed transport system, you can reach this attraction in several ways: by public transport, by rental car, or by taxi.

The most budget-friendly way is by bus. Bus No. 101 (stop "Popeye") runs directly to the park entrance. To catch it, you first need to get to Mellieha Bay. Several routes run here from different parts of the island: from Valletta — buses No. 41 and No. 42, from Sliema — No. 222, and from Bugibba — No. 221. Once you reach the bay, just transfer to route 101, which will take you to the gates of the fairytale village. Keep in mind that bus No. 101 may run with longer intervals, so it's better to plan your time in advance.

For those who value comfort and flexibility, traveling by car is an ideal option. By renting a car, you can not only easily reach Popeye Village but also explore other picturesque corners of northern Malta at your own pace. There is parking at the park entrance. Another convenient method is taxi, which will take you directly to the site, though this option will be more expensive. For walking enthusiasts, there is a pleasant alternative: you can walk from the beach in Mellieha Bay to the village in about 20–25 minutes, enjoying the beautiful views along the way.

History & Facts

The history of Popeye Village is an amazing example of how film sets can take on a life of their own. Construction of this fairytale town began in June 1979 and was undertaken specifically for the filming of the musical movie "Popeye." For seven months, an international team of 165 builders worked diligently to precisely recreate the fictional town of Sweethaven, drawn by cartoonist Elzie Crisler Segar, the author of the original comics.

The scale of the work done is impressive even today. A powerful breakwater nearly 60 meters long was built at the mouth of Anchor Bay specifically to protect the film set from strong waves. To build the 20 colorful wooden houses, construction materials were brought from different countries: logs were imported from the Netherlands, and roof shingles from Canada. The entire project used about 8 tons of nails and over 7,500 liters of paint, demonstrating incredible attention to detail.

Filming took place from January to June 1980. Interestingly, although the film itself received mixed reviews from critics and audiences, the village created for it became a real hit. After filming ended, it was decided not to dismantle the sets, and they became a kind of Hollywood gift to Malta. Over time, this place has become one of the country's most popular and unique tourist attractions, preserving the magical atmosphere of Popeye the Sailor's world for visitors.

Time Needed

When planning a visit to Popeye Village, consider how much time you want to dedicate to entertainment. For a basic introduction to this unique park, which includes walking through the colorful streets, exploring the houses, and taking commemorative photos, 2–3 hours is usually enough. During this time, you will have time to feel the fairytale atmosphere of Sweethaven, peek into several buildings, and watch one of the performances featuring animators.

If you want to dive deeper into the world of Popeye the Sailor, it's better to set aside about half a day for the visit. This will be enough time not only for a leisurely exploration of all corners of the village but also for additional entertainment. For example, you can watch a 15-minute documentary about the creation of the film set, play a round of mini-golf, or take a short 15-minute boat ride around the picturesque Anchor Bay. Such a leisurely visit will allow you to fully enjoy all the activities the park offers.

In the summer months, a visit to Popeye Village can easily take a whole day, especially if you are traveling with children. In hot weather, the main attraction becomes the coastal area with inflatable rides, trampolines, and comfortable sun loungers for relaxing by the crystal-clear waters of the bay. If your plans include swimming and active water activities, feel free to allocate most of the day to this amazing place near Mellieha to get the most out of your holiday in Malta.

Working Hours

The Popeye Village amusement park is open to visitors year-round, but opening hours change depending on the season. During the peak summer season, from July to September, the village usually stays open longer, typically from 9:30 AM to 6:00 PM. In other months, such as the shoulder season (May, October) and low season (November to April), the park usually closes earlier, around 5:30 PM. Since times can change, it is highly recommended to check the current schedule on the park's official website before your visit.

While tickets can be purchased on-site, to avoid potential queues, especially at the height of the tourist season, it is recommended to book them online in advance. Online purchases often allow you to use a separate fast-track entrance. This is particularly convenient if you plan to visit during the summer months when the park is most popular due to the water attractions in Anchor Bay.
