Overview

The climate in Toshima, Japan, can be described as temperate, with four distinct seasons. Significant temperature fluctuations occur throughout the year: from cool winters, when the average January temperature is around 4.5°C and lows can approach freezing, to warm and sometimes hot summers, when the average August temperature reaches 27.7°C and maximums can exceed 30°C.

Winter (December–February) in Toshima is relatively dry and cool, with the lowest amount of precipitation (1–2 mm per month). Spring (March–May) brings gradual warming, and the number of rainy days increases, peaking in May. Summer (June–August) is the warmest and most humid period. June, July, and August are characterized by the highest temperatures and the most precipitation (up to 7 mm) and rainy days (15–17 days per month), indicating significant summer humidity. Autumn (September–November) brings gradual cooling and a decrease in precipitation, though October can still be quite rainy before the weather turns drier by November.

The summer months in Toshima, from June to August, bring hot and generally humid weather. In June, the average temperature is 22.2°C, gradually rising to peak values in July (average 26.5°C) and August (average 27.7°C). Daily highs in the height of summer regularly exceed 29–30°C, while nights remain very warm, with minimum temperatures around 23–24°C. Precipitation

In Toshima, precipitation is distributed unevenly throughout the year, although there is no clearly defined rainy season or dry period. Rather, there is an alternation of periods with more frequent precipitation and drier months. Overall, the amount of precipitation can be described as moderate for most of the year.

The wettest months in terms of precipitation are June, July, and October, with an average of 7 mm each. July stands out for the frequency of rain, with about 17 rainy days. Precipitation is also quite frequent in August (about 16 days), as well as in June, September, and October (with about 15 rainy days in each of these months). This indicates that rain falls regularly from late spring to mid-autumn, but based on the total amount, it is predominantly not very intense.

The driest month in Toshima is December, when only about 1 mm of precipitation falls, and the number of rainy days is minimal—approximately 6. January and February are also characterized by low precipitation (2 mm each) and a small number of rainy days (6 and 8 days, respectively). In winter, precipitation is usually light. Given the low average minimum temperatures in January (around 0.1°C) and December (around 2.4°C), some of this minor winter precipitation may fall as light snow or sleet, although rain remains the primary form of precipitation.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Toshima, it is important to consider seasonal weather changes to ensure your wardrobe is as comfortable as possible. In winter (December–February), it is quite cool here, with average temperatures ranging from 4.5°C to 6.8°C, and nightly lows can drop nearly to freezing. Therefore, be sure to bring warm clothing: a jacket, sweaters, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. In spring (March–May), the temperature gradually rises from 10°C to nearly 19°C, so layering is the ideal solution—a light jacket and jumpers that can be added or removed depending on the weather. Since the number of rainy days increases in the spring (up to 13–14 days per month), a compact umbrella or light raincoat will come in handy.

Summer in Toshima (June–August) is warm and humid, with average temperatures from 22°C to 28°C, and daily highs can reach 30°C. Light, breathable clothing made of natural fabrics, sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses are recommended. June and July are the months with the most precipitation (up to 7 mm) and rainy days (15–17 days), so an umbrella or raincoat will be essential. In autumn (September–November), the weather becomes cooler, especially by November, when the average temperature drops to 12.6°C. The principle of layering is relevant again: light jackets and cardigans. October can also be quite rainy (7 mm of precipitation, 15 rainy days). Regardless of the season, comfortable shoes for long walks are your main companion for any journey through Toshima.
