Overview

The climate in Fuji, Japan, is characterized as temperate with four distinct seasons. There are significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, allowing travelers to experience a variety of weather conditions depending on when they visit.

Winters in Fuji (December–February) are quite cold, with average temperatures around 1.7°C - 3.8°C, occasionally dropping below freezing, and relatively little precipitation. Spring (March–May) brings gradual warming, with average temperatures rising from 6.6°C to 15.0°C, and an increase in rainy days. Summer (June–August) is the warmest time of year, with average temperatures ranging from 18.5°C to 23.8°C, with August being the hottest month. Summer is also marked by the highest amount of rainfall and rainy days, particularly in June and July, indicating a pronounced wet season. Autumn (September–November) brings a gradual cooling and a decrease in precipitation, creating comfortable conditions for sightseeing.

Temperature

The city of Fuji in Japan experiences noticeable seasonal temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The coldest month is usually January, when the average temperature is around 1.7°C, and nighttime lows can drop to -2.1°C. Daytime highs in January rarely exceed 5.5°C. Conversely, August brings the hottest weather, with an average temperature of 23.8°C. During this time, daytime temperatures average 27.1°C, while nights remain warm, with lows around 20.5°C.

The summer months in Fuji, from June to August, are characterized by warmth that transitions into heat. June kicks off the summer season with average temperatures around 18.5°C (ranging from 14.9°C to 22.2°C), creating comfortable conditions. It gets significantly hotter in July and August: average daytime temperatures steadily climb above 26-27°C. Nights also remain warm, with temperatures rarely falling below 19-20°C, contributing to a sense of constant warmth. Given the high number of rainy days in the summer months, increased humidity can also be expected, making the heat feel more intense.

Winter in Fuji, spanning December, January, and February, is quite cool. Average daily temperatures range from 1.7°C in January to 3.8°C in December. Nighttime frosts are common, especially in January (average low -2.1°C) and February (average low -1.3°C), when the thermometer regularly drops below zero. Daytime temperatures in winter usually stay within 5-8°C, creating a fresh, invigorating atmosphere. Noticeable daily temperature fluctuations occur throughout the year: the difference between the daytime high and the nighttime low is often between 6 and 9 degrees Celsius. These swings are particularly felt in the spring and autumn months, as well as in winter, when daytime warmth quickly gives way to nighttime chill.

Precipitation

Precipitation occurs year-round in Fuji, but the total amount and frequency vary significantly by season. There is a wetter period during the summer and early autumn months, and a drier period in winter.

The highest amount of precipitation and rainy days occurs from June to September. July stands out as the wettest month, with an average of 11 mm of precipitation and up to 23 rainy days. June typically sees about 10 mm of precipitation and 20 rainy days. August and September are also quite wet, with 8 mm of precipitation and 23 and 22 rainy days, respectively. During these warm months, precipitation falls mainly as rain.

The winter months, from December to February, are the driest in Fuji. December and January have the lowest precipitation—just 2 mm each—with December seeing about 8 days of precipitation and January seeing 9. February sees about 4 mm of precipitation over 11 days. Given that minimum temperatures in these months drop below freezing (from -0.3°C to -2.1°C), winter precipitation often falls as snow or ice pellets. The spring (March, April, May) and autumn (October, November) months are transitional, with a moderate amount of precipitation that gradually increases toward summer and decreases toward winter.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Fuji, it is important to prepare for the diverse weather conditions typical of this region of Japan. Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes will be your indispensable companion. The principle of layering your clothing is key to comfort, as it allows you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, especially during the shoulder seasons. Don't forget a power adapter if your devices use a different plug.

In winter (December to February), Fuji is quite cold, with average temperatures ranging from -2°C to 7°C. You will need warm clothing: sweaters, fleeces, an insulated jacket, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Although precipitation is minimal during this period, windproof and water-repellent outerwear will be useful. Spring (March–May) and autumn (October–November) bring milder but still cool weather. Temperatures gradually rise in spring (from 1°C to 19°C) and fall in autumn (from 10°C to 17°C). It is recommended to pack a mid-weight jacket, jumpers, and a must-have umbrella or light raincoat, as the number of rainy days increases significantly, especially from March to May and in October.

Summer months (June–August) in Fuji are warm and humid, with average temperatures ranging from 15°C to 27°C. This is also the period with the highest rainfall and the maximum number of rainy days (up to 23 days per month). Therefore, your suitcase should definitely include light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics, as well as a reliable umbrella and/or a high-quality raincoat. Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for clear days. September continues the summer trends with warm and rainy weather, so summer recommendations remain relevant, perhaps with the addition of a light sweater or windbreaker for the evening.
