Overview

Kep, located on the Cambodian coast, greets travelers with a classic tropical climate. The weather here remains warm and comfortable for a getaway almost year-round. Thanks to its proximity to the sea, the heat is often tempered by a refreshing breeze, and temperatures are remarkably stable: average air readings fluctuate within a narrow range of +26°C to +29°C, creating an atmosphere of eternal summer.

There are two distinct periods throughout the year. The dry season, which lasts mainly from December to March, is characterized by plenty of sunny days and a minimal chance of precipitation—making it the ideal time for beach holidays and excursions. From May to October, the wet season arrives, and the number of rainy days increases significantly. However, even during this time, the rain often takes the form of brief tropical showers that bring a pleasant freshness and make the surrounding nature especially lush and green.

Temperature

Kep welcomes travelers with a typical tropical climate where temperature fluctuations throughout the year are insignificant, and the concept of "cold" is virtually non-existent. The hottest period is traditionally spring: in April, the average temperature reaches its peak at 28.8°C, while daytime air often warms up to 32.0°C. This is a time of heat when, even after sunset, the temperature remains high, rarely dropping below 25–26°C.

The unofficial "winter" in this region of Cambodia is considered the most comfortable time for a visit. The "coolest" months are December and January, when averages are around 26.2°C — 26.4°C. This period sees the most noticeable difference between daytime warmth and nighttime freshness: at night, the thermometer can drop to 22.8°C, providing a pleasant break from the daytime sun.

The summer period and early autumn are characterized by a very stable temperature regime, with average values around 27°C. During this time, the daily temperature range is minimal—the difference between the daytime maximum and nighttime minimum is only about 4 degrees (for example, in July, from 25.1°C to 29.1°C). This steady weather is due to high cloud cover and the rainy season, which smooths out temperature peaks, preventing the air from heating up as intensely as in the spring.

Precipitation

The climate in Kep follows the monsoon rhythms typical of Cambodia, clearly dividing the year into dry and wet seasons. For fans of sunny weather, it is best to plan a trip during the winter months: January and February are considered the driest, when rainfall is minimal (averaging about 1 mm) and there are no more than 7–8 rainy days per month.

The rainy season takes hold in May and lasts until the end of October. During this period, rain becomes a frequent companion for travelers. From July to October, it rains almost daily—statistics show up to 28–29 rainy days per month. However, these are often warm tropical downpours that can be short and intense, bringing a welcome freshness.

Statistically, the wettest month of the year is September, which sees the highest amount of precipitation. April and November serve as transitional periods when the weather can be changeable. When traveling during the rainy season, be prepared for high humidity and always carry a raincoat, though nature looks especially vibrant and green at this time of year.

Packing Tips

Given Kep's consistently warm tropical climate, your luggage should primarily consist of light clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics such as cotton or linen. The average air temperature stays around +27°C year-round, so t-shirts, shorts, and summer dresses are suitable for any season. Don't forget reliable sun protection: a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are essential even on cloudy days.

If you are planning a trip during the rainy season (mainly from May to October), when precipitation occurs almost daily, be sure to bring a light raincoat or a high-quality rain poncho. An umbrella may be less convenient in windy conditions. For footwear during this period, it is best to choose quick-drying and non-slip options, such as trekking sandals that are not afraid of water and mud.

For walks through Kep National Park and exploring the surrounding areas, you will need comfortable closed-toe sneakers. Despite the heat, it is worth packing one light long-sleeved sweater or shirt for evening strolls by the sea or for protection against insects in the jungle. And, of course, don't forget your swimwear for the coast and repellents to make your evenings more comfortable.
