The building impresses with its symmetry and a luxurious dome that rises 146 feet (44.5 meters). Grey sandstone quarried near Rawlins was used for its construction, giving the facade a noble and monumental appearance. The central portico with its massive columns is reminiscent of the finest examples of European classics.
Today, the Capitol is recognized as a National Historic Landmark. It houses the offices of the Governor and key officials, while the interiors, carefully restored during a recent renovation, allow visitors to touch the living history of American democracy.
