The central element of the ensemble is the station building, erected in the late 19th century from textured sandstone in the Richardsonian Romanesque style. Its recognizable silhouette with high towers is considered one of the most beautiful examples of railroad architecture in North America. The plaza itself is decorated with unique art objects, including the famous giant cowboy boots, which have become an unofficial symbol of the city.

Today, this is not just a former transportation hub, but the living heart of the city. It houses the Cheyenne Depot Museum, where you can learn about the golden age of trains, as well as a cozy restaurant and brewery. The site is a recognized National Historic Landmark and serves as a starting point for all tourists wishing to feel the spirit of the Wild West.

What to Do

Start your discovery of the plaza with a leisurely stroll past the "Don’t Feed the Animals" sculpture series — those famous eight-foot boots, each hand-painted to tell its own story of Wyoming. Be sure to find the "Iron Horse" and "Duster" statues, which perfectly capture the cowboy flavor and serve as excellent backdrops for memorable photos.

Step inside the station itself to visit the Cheyenne Depot Museum. Here you can see an impressive mosaic map of the railroads built right into the floor and explore exhibits dedicated to engineering and the lives of pioneers. If you're hungry, there is a popular brewpub on the ground floor where you can try local cuisine and craft beer surrounded by authentic early 20th-century interiors.

For those who want to see the city from a different perspective, tickets for a tourist trolley can be purchased at the plaza. And if you're lucky enough to be here during holidays or city events, you'll catch live concerts and fairs that transform the depot grounds into the city's main entertainment venue.

Getting There

Reaching the historic heart of the city is quite easy, as Cheyenne Depot Plaza is located at 1 Depot Square, at the intersection of Capitol Ave and W 15th St. Thanks to its central location, it is within walking distance of most key downtown sites.

If you decide to walk from the Wyoming State Capitol, the direct path along Capitol Avenue takes only 10–15 minutes. For those arriving from outlying areas or Cheyenne Airport (about a 20-minute drive), it is most convenient to take a taxi or a rental car — free parking is available near the station.

You can also reach the plaza by local buses or Greyhound intercity coaches, whose terminal was traditionally located nearby. For railroad enthusiasts, the location itself, right next to the active Union Pacific railyard, serves as an excellent landmark.

History & Facts

The history of this site began in March 1886, when the Union Pacific company decided to build a grand station building designed to highlight the power of the Transcontinental Railroad. Unique multicolored sandstone brought from Colorado was used for the construction. Despite labor strikes, the Richardsonian Romanesque style building was completed in 1887, becoming the largest railroad hub between Omaha and San Francisco.

Throughout the 20th century, the complex continuously evolved: an east wing was added in 1922, and in 1929, the interiors were modernized in an elegant Art Deco style. However, with the decline of passenger rail travel mid-century, the restaurant closed and the waiting rooms sat empty, eventually being converted into office space.

A new chapter for Cheyenne Depot Plaza began in 1993, when Union Pacific officially donated the building to the city. A massive restoration project preserved its authentic appearance, including the famous clock tower, which has housed its clock since 1890. In 2006, the site was deservingly designated a National Historic Landmark.

Time Needed

For a brief introduction to Cheyenne Depot Plaza, walking between the giant boots and viewing the facades, you will need about one hour. This is plenty of time to take atmospheric photos and explore the outdoor information boards.

If you are planning a full immersion into history, including a visit to the Cheyenne Depot Museum and lunch at the local brewpub, you should set aside 2 to 3 hours. Railroad fans might need even more time to watch the trains on the tracks of the adjacent active depot.

Working Hours

As an open city space, Cheyenne Depot Plaza is accessible to visitors daily. Generally, you can walk around the grounds and view the outdoor exhibits between 07:00 and 23:00, which is convenient for both early morning walks and evening viewing with illumination.
