The history of this iconic site began in March 1969. The monument was erected in honor of the pilots who participated in the liberation of the city. The author of the original project was architect Roman Romanovych Marhel. Notably, a real MiG-15 combat fighter with an 11-meter wingspan was used for the monument instead of a model. Legend has it that the architect was so nervous on opening day that he watched the ceremony not from the crowd, but from the balcony of a colleague's apartment overlooking the square.

In the 1990s, the plane became the subject of urban legends: it was said that passers-by occasionally found shelter inside the hollow fuselage, and once the police even discovered a hidden stash there. However, 2016 marked a new chapter in the monument's history. The square was renamed in honor of Kostiantyn Mohylko—a heroic squadron commander whose name is now inextricably linked with this aviation symbol.

Between 2016 and 2017, a large-scale reconstruction took place under the guidance of architect Denys Kaminsky. The old concrete stele was dismantled, and the MiG-15 itself was sent to a factory for restoration. Interestingly, the aircraft was transported in one piece, without cutting off the wings, to preserve its structural integrity. Today, the renovated pedestal and the surrounding “Slid” installation look like a unified modern art piece.
