Overview

The climate in Jiaoxi can be described as humid subtropical. Warm temperatures prevail year-round, without sharp cold snaps or frosts. Average annual figures range from comfortable coolness in the winter months to genuine summer heat, making the town attractive to visit in different seasons depending on your temperature preferences.

Jiaoxi experiences fairly distinct seasons. Summer, lasting roughly from June to August, is characterized as hot and humid, with average air temperatures around 26-27°C. Winter, from December to February, is mild and cooler here, with average temperatures around 15-16°C. The spring and autumn months are pleasant transitional periods. A notable feature of Jiaoxi's climate is the high number of rainy days throughout the year, even if the total monthly amount is not always large.

Almost every month in Jiaoxi sees between 18 and 25 days when precipitation is possible. This doesn't always mean heavy downpours; more often, it is a light drizzle or short rain showers that help maintain high humidity. While October stands out with slightly more rainfall (about 14 mm), generally, lightweight waterproof clothing can come in handy for travelers visiting Jiaoxi at any time of year.

Temperature

The town of Jiaoxi in Taiwan is characterized by a warm climate throughout the year, with noticeable seasonal temperature fluctuations. The hottest month is usually July, when the average temperature reaches 27.4°C, and daily highs can rise to an average of 29.6°C. August is also very warm, with an average temperature of 27.1°C. The coolest month is considered January, with an average temperature of 14.9°C, while nightly lows drop to an average of 13.0°C. Thus, the annual range of average temperatures is approximately 12.5 degrees, indicating a distinct change of seasons but without extreme cold.

The summer period in Jiaoxi, spanning the months from June to August, features consistently hot weather. Average daily temperatures in these months range from 26.1°C in June to 27.4°C in July. Daily highs often approach 30°C (e.g., 29.6°C in July), and nights remain very warm, with minimum temperatures rarely dropping below 23.9-25.1°C. Winter, from December to February, in Jiaoxi is mild and cool. Average temperatures during this period vary from 14.9°C in January to 15.9°C in December. Daytime temperatures usually stay within 16.7-17.8°C, while nighttime temperatures can drop to 13.0-14.3°C, creating comfortable conditions for those who prefer to avoid intense heat.

A feature of Jiaoxi's climate is the relatively small difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows throughout the year. This difference usually ranges from 3 to 5 degrees Celsius (for example, in January the difference is 3.7°C, and in July it is 4.5°C). This means that nights do not bring a sharp cool-down after the daytime warmth, and the temperature remains fairly stable throughout the day. This pattern of temperature fluctuations, combined with high humidity—especially noticeable in the summer months—forms the typical subtropical climate of the region.

Precipitation

In Jiaoxi, precipitation is a frequent occurrence throughout the year, and there is no clearly defined dry season. The weather is characterized by a high number of rainy days in almost every month, which indicates high humidity. Given the average monthly temperatures, precipitation falls mainly as rain.

The highest volume of precipitation usually occurs in October, when an average of 14 mm falls, with about 24 rainy days. June also stands out as the month with the maximum number of rainy days—as many as 25—though the total volume of precipitation is slightly lower, around 10 mm. Overall, the period from May to December can be considered wetter, with frequent rain, as the number of rainy days ranges from 20 to 25 per month.

The lowest amount of precipitation is observed in March and April—only 4 mm in each month. These months also have the fewest rainy days, around 18. February is also relatively "dry" with 5 mm of precipitation and about 19 rainy days. However, even in these seemingly drier periods, rain occurs quite often, affecting more than half the days of the month. This indicates that Jiaoxi is characterized by frequent, though not always intense, rain throughout the year.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Jiaoxi, it is important to consider its humid subtropical climate with frequent precipitation throughout the year. Regardless of the season, a waterproof jacket or a high-quality umbrella will be your faithful companions, as the number of rainy days here is significant even if the total rainfall is not always high. Comfortable, waterproof walking shoes are also highly recommended to keep your feet dry while exploring the town and its surroundings. Layering is the best approach for Jiaoxi, as it allows you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day and when moving between air-conditioned indoors and the outdoors.

In the cooler months, roughly from December to March, when average temperatures range from 14.9°C to 17.9°C, it's worth bringing light jackets, sweaters, fleeces, and long trousers. While there is no frost, evenings and early mornings can be quite brisk. From May to September, a hotter and more humid period begins, with average temperatures from 23.6°C to 27.4°C. For this time of year, lightweight, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics is ideal: t-shirts, shorts, skirts, and sundresses. Don't forget sunscreen, a hat, and sunglasses for sun protection, especially in the summer months. Transitional months such as April, October, and November feature moderate temperatures, so a combination of light items with the option to add a warmer layer will be optimal.

Given the high humidity and frequent rain, clothes made from quick-drying materials can be very practical. Also, if you plan to visit Jiaoxi's famous hot springs, don't forget your swimwear. A small backpack is useful for day trips to hold a raincoat, a water bottle, and other essentials. Insect repellent can also be helpful, especially in the warm and humid months.
