Overview

The weather in Rubavu is remarkably stable and mild, making this city on the shores of Lake Kivu a great destination to visit almost year-round. The climate here can be described as temperate: thanks to the local terrain, there is no exhausting tropical heat or extreme cold. The average air temperature is surprisingly constant, staying within a comfortable range of 17°C to 18°C, while daytime temperatures usually warm up to a pleasant 21-22°C, creating a sense of eternal spring.

An important feature of the local climate is the relatively high humidity and regular rainfall. Rainy days prevail throughout much of the year, especially during the spring and autumn months when precipitation can occur almost daily. However, a distinct "dry season" does exist, falling in June and July when the number of rainy days decreases significantly. At other times, travelers should be prepared for frequent but refreshing showers that keep the region’s greenery lush and vibrant.

Temperature

The climate in Rubavu is remarkably stable and mild, earning it a reputation as a region of "eternal spring." Weather data analysis shows that the temperature remains almost unchanged throughout the year: the average monthly temperature fluctuates within a very narrow range from 17.5°C to 18.3°C. February is the warmest month, with average highs reaching 22.0°C, creating ideal conditions for walking and relaxing on the shores of Lake Kivu without sweltering heat.

The period from June to August, which can be thought of as the local "winter," is characterized by minimal rainfall and slightly cooler nights. In July, nighttime temperatures can drop to an annual low of 13.8°C, though daytime temperatures remain comfortable, rising above 21°C. This time of year feels less like a cold season and more like a period of pleasant freshness, especially compared to wetter months like April or November.

A key feature of the weather in this part of Rwanda is the daily temperature range. Regardless of the month, the difference between the daytime high and the nighttime low is about 7–8 degrees. Days are usually warm and suited for light clothing (average high of 21–22°C), but evenings and nights bring a noticeable chill (around 14°C). Travelers should keep this in mind and carry warm layers for the evening hours.

Precipitation

In Rubavu, precipitation occurs regularly throughout the year, which is typical for this region of Rwanda. Travelers should keep in mind that rain is a frequent guest; however, the year can be divided into wetter periods and a relatively dry season. Snow never falls in this region, so "precipitation" always refers to rain.

The rainiest weather is observed in spring and autumn. The months with the highest frequency of rainfall are March, April, October, and November. For instance, in April, it can rain almost every day—statistics show an average of about 29 wet days. In terms of volume, the peak occurs in November (around 16 mm) and October (14 mm).

If you prefer clearer skies, the best time to visit is mid-year. June and July are considered the driest months. In July, the number of rainy days drops to a minimum (about 11 days), and the rainfall volume falls to 2 mm, making this the most favorable time for relaxing on Lake Kivu and exploring the city.

Packing Tips

Since the climate in Rubavu is mild with stable temperatures, layering is the best approach for your wardrobe. Daytime temperatures typically stay within a comfortable range of +18°C to +21°C, so light t-shirts, shirts, and trousers made of natural fabrics should form the core of your luggage. However, evenings and early mornings can be chilly, so be sure to bring a warm sweater, a fleece, or a light jacket to stay cozy during lakeside walks.

Special attention should be paid to rain protection, as showers occur frequently throughout the year. Even in relatively dry months like July, rain is possible, and in April and November, the number of rainy days reaches its peak. A high-quality raincoat, a waterproof windbreaker, and a compact umbrella are essentials on your packing list. For walking, choose comfortable, closed-toe shoes with non-slip soles that can handle damp conditions.

Despite the frequent cloud cover, don't forget sun protection, especially considering the high altitude. Pack sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat. Insect repellent will also come in handy for the evenings. If you plan to relax on the shores of Lake Kivu, remember to bring your swimwear, as sunny days offer perfect weather for a dip in the water.
