Overview

Budva, a charming town in Montenegro, enjoys a typical Mediterranean climate. This means that seasons are distinct: look forward to warm, sunny summers and mild, wetter winters. This climate makes Budva attractive to visit almost year-round, depending on your preferences.

Summer months, especially July and August, are characterized by high temperatures, averaging around 23-24°C, and minimal rainfall — ideal conditions for beach holidays and boat trips. Winter, from December to February, brings cooler weather with average temperatures around 4-6°C and more rainy days, particularly in November and December. Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional periods with comfortable temperatures and moderate rainfall, perfect for excursions and walks through the picturesque surroundings.

Conversely, winter is considered the coolest period, with January as the coldest month, when the average temperature is only 4.6°C, and night-time lows can drop to 1.6°C, while daytime highs rarely exceed 7.6°C.

This period is characterized by pleasant warmth, perfect for spending long periods by the sea.

Precipitation

Budva experiences a fairly distinct annual distribution of precipitation, characteristic of a Mediterranean climate. There is a pronounced dry summer period and a wetter autumn-winter season. Overall, the amount of precipitation is moderate, but its intensity and frequency vary significantly throughout the year.

The driest months in Budva are July and August, with only 2 mm of rainfall each. During these summer months, rain is a rare occurrence, with an average of only 8-10 rainy days. June also features low rainfall (3 mm), although there may be slightly more rainy days, around 13. This period is ideal for those seeking predominantly sunny weather.

With the arrival of autumn, the amount of precipitation begins to gradually increase. November is the wettest month of the year, with an average of 12 mm of rainfall and the number of rainy days reaching 15. December is also quite rainy (10 mm of rainfall and 15 rainy days). The winter months, including January (8 mm, 14 rainy days) and February (7 mm, 11 rainy days), continue the trend of more frequent precipitation compared to summer, mostly in the form of rain. Interestingly, May, despite moderate rainfall (6 mm), stands out with the highest number of precipitation days — as many as 18 — which may indicate frequent but likely low-intensity rain in this spring month.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Budva, it's important to choose your wardrobe correctly to feel comfortable in any weather. In summer, especially in July and August, when temperatures often rise above +25°C (peaking at +27-28°C) and rainfall is minimal (only 2 mm), your suitcase should contain light, breathable clothing: T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and, of course, swimwear. Don't forget sunscreen with high SPF, a hat, and sunglasses. For evening strolls or the occasional summer rain (in June, for example, there are up to 13 rainy days, albeit with low precipitation), a light wrap or cardigan might come in handy. Comfortable shoes for walking around the old town and the surrounding areas are a traveler's must-have at any time of year.

Spring and autumn in Budva are wonderful times for sightseeing, but the weather can be changeable. From March to May and from September to November, average temperatures fluctuate between +7.8°C and +19.1°C. The key principle for these seasons is layering. Bring T-shirts, long-sleeved tops, a sweater or fleece jacket, and a mid-season jacket, preferably waterproof. This is especially relevant for May, which can have up to 18 days with precipitation (though only 6 mm total), and November, the wettest month (12 mm of rainfall and 15 rainy days). A light foldable umbrella or raincoat will also be useful. Jeans or comfortable trousers and closed-toe shoes will ensure comfort during long walks.

Winter in Budva (from December to February) is mild, with average temperatures around +4.6°C to +6.4°C, but quite wet — on average 11-15 rainy days per month with rainfall between 7 and 10 mm. For a winter trip, you'll need a warm jacket (possibly waterproof), sweaters, warm trousers, a hat, scarf, and gloves. Waterproof shoes with non-slip soles will come in very handy given the frequent rain. While severe frosts are uncommon, the combination of cool temperatures and humidity requires appropriate gear to ensure your introduction to winter Budva is as pleasant as possible.
