Overview

In Puerto Morelos, a classic tropical climate awaits, offering the feeling of eternal summer. Air temperatures remain consistently high throughout the year without sharp seasonal shifts. Annual averages fluctuate within a comfortable range of 24°C to 29°C, making this resort an attractive destination at any time. Be prepared for warm, and sometimes hot, weather—perfect for beach holidays and exploring the underwater world of the Caribbean Sea.

Instead of the usual four seasons, the climate in Puerto Morelos is divided into two main periods: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season, lasting roughly from February to April, is characterized by the lowest rainfall and the highest number of sunny days. This is the most popular time for tourists. From May to October, the rainy season arrives, bringing increased humidity and a higher chance of precipitation. Rainfall peaks in June, September, and October; however, showers are usually short and refreshing, with the sun quickly reappearing afterward.

Temperature

Puerto Morelos enjoys a warm tropical climate, making it a comfortable destination to visit year-round. Temperature fluctuations throughout the year are minimal. The hottest months are traditionally July and August, when the average air temperature is around 28.6°C, and daytime highs regularly reach 30.8°C. The "coolest" month is January, but even then the weather remains very pleasant: the average temperature stays around 24.2°C, and nighttime temperatures rarely drop below 22°C.

The summer period, roughly from May to October, is characterized as hot and humid. Daytime heat is combined with very warm nights, where the thermometer stays within the 25-26°C range. The winter months, from December to March, are considered high season due to milder and drier conditions. During this time, daytime temperatures hover around a comfortable 25-27°C, creating ideal conditions for beach holidays and excursions. A key feature of the local climate is the small difference between day and night temperatures, which usually does not exceed 4-5°C, ensuring that evenings always remain warm.

Precipitation

Puerto Morelos has a clear division of the year into two main seasons: dry and rainy. Understanding these climate cycles will help you better plan your trip and choose the most comfortable time for your vacation.

The rainy season in Puerto Morelos usually lasts from June to October. This period sees the highest amount of precipitation. The wettest months are June, which records the maximum volume of rainfall (about 7 mm), as well as September and October, which lead in rain frequency—averaging 23-24 rainy days per month. The rain usually takes the form of short but intense tropical showers that quickly give way to sunny weather. Despite the frequent precipitation, air temperatures remain high.

The dry season falls between February and April. This is the driest time of year, ideal for those who want to enjoy the sun and sea without worrying about the rain. March and April see minimal rainfall (only about 1 mm), and the number of rainy days does not exceed 8 for the entire month. Winter months, such as December and January, are transitional—rain is possible, but significantly less frequent than in summer.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Puerto Morelos, prepare for warm tropical weather regardless of the time of year. Your wardrobe should be built around light, breathable items made from natural fabrics like cotton and linen: t-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and, of course, several swimsuits. Since the sun is very strong here, be sure to bring high-SPF sunscreen, quality sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat to protect your face. Sandals or flip-flops are ideal for walking around town and the beach. Evenings can bring a light breeze, so a thin sweater, cardigan, or pashmina will come in handy.

The key difference between seasons in Puerto Morelos is the amount of rainfall. While temperatures remain comfortably high year-round, the rainy season lasts from May to November. During this period, short but intense tropical showers are frequent. To ensure the weather doesn't catch you off guard, pack a light waterproof raincoat or poncho. Quick-drying clothes and water-resistant footwear are also useful. Regardless of the season, don't forget insect repellent, which is especially helpful in the evenings and after rain. Comfortable closed-toe shoes, such as sneakers, will be necessary if you plan excursions into the jungle or to Mayan ruins.
