Overview

The town of Bacalar in Mexico boasts a typical tropical climate, characterized by high and fairly stable temperatures throughout the year. Average monthly temperatures fluctuate in a pleasant range from 24.3°C in January to 29.2°C in May, creating comfortable conditions for a getaway at almost any time. Even minimum nighttime temperatures rarely drop below 20°C.

Bacalar's climate has two main seasons. The dry season usually lasts from November to April. During these months, rainfall is minimal (only 1-3 mm per month), and the number of rainy days is low, especially from February to April. This period is characterized by predominantly sunny and clear weather. The rainy season falls between May and October. These months see an increase in precipitation, peaking in June (8 mm), and a significant rise in the number of rainy days, especially from June to September, when it can rain almost every day. Despite this, air temperatures remain high, and the rains are often short-lived.

Temperature

The climate in Bacalar is characterized by warm temperatures year-round, with slight fluctuations between seasons. The hottest month is usually May, when the average temperature reaches 29.2°C, and daytime highs can rise to 33.1°C. Nights in May are also very warm, with an average minimum temperature of 25.2°C. The coolest month is considered January, with an average temperature of 24.3°C, but even during this period, daytime temperatures are pleasant at around 27.9°C, while nighttime lows average 20.6°C.

The summer period, which roughly spans from April to October, is marked by consistently high temperatures. Average daily values in these months range from 27.1°C (October) to 29.2°C (May). The daytime heat can be quite noticeable, especially from April to August, when maximum temperatures often exceed 31-32°C. Given the high number of rainy days, especially from June to October, summer weather can feel hot and humid. Even nighttime temperatures remain high, rarely dropping below 24-25°C.

The winter months, from November to March, bring milder and more comfortable weather. Average temperatures during this period vary from 24.3°C in January to 26.9°C in March. Days are usually sunny and pleasantly warm, with maximum temperatures ranging from 27.9°C to 31.2°C. Nights become noticeably cooler compared to summer, with minimum temperatures from 20.6°C to 22.5°C, ensuring a comfortable night's sleep. The difference between day and night temperatures throughout the year averages 6-9°C, making evenings and early mornings refreshing.

Precipitation

Bacalar experiences distinct seasonality in its precipitation patterns throughout the year, although total rainfall volumes remain moderate. Given Mexico's warm climate, all precipitation falls as rain. The town goes through periods with more frequent rain and, conversely, drier months.

The driest period in Bacalar falls between February and April. During this time, there is minimal rainfall — only about 1 mm per month. March stands out as the month with the fewest rainy days, averaging just 6. January (2 mm) and December (2 mm) also feature low precipitation levels, though they have slightly more rainy days than the February-April period. Overall, these months are characterized by rare and light showers.

The period with more frequent precipitation usually lasts from May to October, peaking in the summer and early autumn months. June is the month with the highest average rainfall, reaching 8 mm. However, September leads in frequency, with about 27 rainy days. June, July, August, and October also see a significant number of rainy days (23-24 days). May and November can be considered transition months, when the amount of rainfall and number of rainy days begin to increase or decrease respectively.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Bacalar, keep in mind its warm tropical climate that lasts all year. The core of your wardrobe should consist of light and breathable clothing: cotton t-shirts, shorts, skirts, and sundresses. Since the lagoon is the main attraction, swimwear is absolutely essential. Don't forget sun protection: a wide-brimmed hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen are must-haves, as the sun here is quite strong. Comfortable walking shoes or sandals will come in handy for exploring the town and its surroundings.

Although Bacalar is warm year-round, with average temperatures between 24°C and 29°C, it's worth remembering the rainy season, which usually lasts from May to October and sometimes into November. During these months (especially from June to September, when the number of rainy days peaks and 6 to 8 mm of rain falls), humidity rises and the likelihood of precipitation increases. Therefore, it is recommended to bring a light waterproof jacket or rain poncho. Clothes made of quick-drying fabrics will also be very useful. In the drier months, from January to April, when there is only 1-2 mm of rain, showers are rare, but light protection against a sudden downpour won't hurt.

Regardless of the season, don't forget insect repellent, especially if you plan to spend evenings by the water. A reusable water bottle will help you stay hydrated in the tropical heat. For evening walks or in case of chilly air-conditioned rooms, where it might feel cooler than the 20-25°C minimums outside, a light sweater or shawl may be useful. If you plan to swim in cenotes or the lagoon, water shoes will provide extra comfort. And, of course, a small waterproof case for electronics and documents will be useful during boat tours or sudden rain.
