The monumental composition is made of copper and impresses with its scale. The total height of the structure, including the pedestal, is over 17 meters (some sources state up to 33 meters), while the figure of the hero himself reaches 10 meters in height. Created by the talented sculptor Bazarbay Sadykov, the monument depicts a rider on his faithful horse Ak-Kula, with his right hand raised in a welcoming gesture, symbolizing peaceful intentions and openness.

Special attention should be paid to the artistic details: the warrior's armor and the horse's trappings are worked out with exceptional thoroughness. This location is a focal point for official delegations and travelers wishing to get acquainted with the cultural heritage of the country and feel the spirit of the legendary tales of the great khan.

What to Do

A visit to Ala-Too Square provides an excellent opportunity to admire the monumental architecture and take iconic photos against the backdrop of one of the city's tallest monuments. The majestic figure of Manas looks perfect through a camera lens, especially if you choose an angle that captures the endless sky and the surrounding mountain landscape, which peeks through in clear weather.

Stroll through the spacious square, which often hosts cultural events, holiday concerts, and parades. In the immediate vicinity of the monument, you can watch the changing of the guard of honor at the main state flagpole. This sight always attracts the attention of city guests with its precision and solemnity.

The evening brings a special charm to this place. Thanks to a well-designed lighting system, the monument looks very impressive at dusk. Many travelers recommend ending the walk with a visit to the nearby philharmonic or national museums to complement their knowledge of the region's history and art. For those seeking a more relaxing break, cozy small parks with benches are situated nearby.

Getting There

The monument is located in the very heart of the capital on Ala-Too Square, making it highly accessible for tourists. You can get here from almost anywhere in the city using public transport. Numerous buses and trolleybuses, as well as minibuses (for example, routes No. 117, 127, 165), stop near the square.

If you prefer comfort, a taxi ride from the central districts of the city will take only 5–10 minutes, and from Manas International Airport—about 30 minutes. For those staying in central hotels, a walk to the square will be a pleasant addition to the itinerary and will take no more than 15–20 minutes.

It is recommended to use online maps to plot an accurate route, as the pedestrian zone around the square is very convenient for getting around. Please note that parking directly at the monument is limited, so it is better to leave your car on neighboring streets.

History & Facts

The Epic of Manas is not just literature, but a true cultural code of the people. It is one of the world's longest oral epics, included in the UNESCO list of Masterpieces of the Oral and Intangible Heritage of Humanity. The main hero, the legendary warrior Manas, is revered as a symbol of national unity and justice, who united the disparate tribes into a single state.

The modern monument on the central square was ceremoniously opened on August 31, 2011. This event was timed to coincide with the 20th anniversary of the country's independence. The sculpture took the place of the "Erkindik" (Freedom) statue and was the result of a large-scale reconstruction of the city's main public space. Interestingly, funds for the monument's creation were partially raised through public donations.

Sculptor Bazarbay Sadykov sought to create a collective image of the Kyrgyz warrior. It is said that the facial features of the hero hint at the appearance of the famous actor Suimonkul Chokmorov. Although Manas is depicted in full battle gear, his raised hand symbolizes peace and greeting, and his sword is intentionally left in its scabbard to emphasize the hero's magnanimity and constructive character.

Time Needed

Typically, tourists spend about 30–40 minutes inspecting the monument itself and having a short photo session. This is enough time to examine the details of the copper sculpture and feel the scale of the structure against the urban backdrop.

However, if you decide to combine your visit to the monument with a walk across the entire Ala-Too Square, watching the guard of honor, and relaxing by the fountains, you should plan for at least 1.5–2 hours. This will allow you to enjoy the atmosphere of the city center without rushing, especially in the late afternoon.

Working Hours

Since the monument is located in the open area of the central square, visual access to it is possible around the clock. However, the official operating schedule for the site as a tourist attraction is daily from 06:00 to 18:00.

It is recommended to visit the square during daylight hours to see all the chased details on the copper figure, or late in the evening when the illumination is turned on, creating a special solemn atmosphere around the national hero.
