The country's main art museum traces its history back to 1934, when the republic hosted its first large-scale exhibition of works by local masters. Its official founding date is January 1, 1935, when the institution began operating as the National Art Gallery.

The foundation of the current extensive collection was laid by the outstanding master Semyon Afanasyevich Chuikov. He personally selected the first 72 works by Russian classics from the storerooms of the State Tretyakov Gallery and the RSFSR People's Commissariat for Education to bring them to Bishkek and introduce the local public to global painting traditions.

Over time, the museum became a powerful cultural bridge, connecting the classical academic school with authentic Kyrgyz art. Invaluable contributions to its development were made by such masters as Gapar Aitiev, whose name the museum proudly bears today, as well as Alexander Ignatyev and Sabyrbek Akylbekov.
