Getting There: Introduction

Located in the eastern part of Shikoku Island, Tokushima serves as an important gateway to this colourful and distinctive region of Japan. The city attracts travellers not only with the famous Awa Odori dance festival but also with its unique atmosphere, where modern rhythms intertwine with a traditional way of life.

You can reach Tokushima in various ways, choosing the most convenient route depending on your departure point. The city has excellent transport accessibility: it is easy to get here by direct flight, arrive by train with a transfer, or use the network of intercity buses.

By Plane

The fastest way to reach the city is to fly to Tokushima Awaodori Airport (TKS), which is the key aviation hub of the region. The airport is conveniently located and well-connected to the city, allowing tourists to reach the centre effortlessly immediately after landing.

If there are no direct flights, you can consider flying to neighbouring cities with a subsequent transfer. The closest option is the airport in Takamatsu (about 56 km away); Okayama or Shirahama are also convenient options from where it is easy to continue the journey by ground transport.

By Train

Although Shinkansen bullet trains do not enter Tokushima, the city is integrated into the JR railway network and has its own station. Travellers usually need to take the Shinkansen to Okayama on Honshu Island, and then transfer to trains crossing the Seto Ohashi Bridge to Shikoku Island.

A popular route involves travelling through Takamatsu, from where express trains depart directly to Tokushima Station. You can also arrive by rail from the direction of Shirahama, enjoying coastal views, although this journey will take more time.

By Bus

Intercity buses are one of the most popular ways to get to Tokushima, especially from the Kansai region (Osaka, Kobe), thanks to the bridges connecting the islands. Travelling by bus often proves faster and cheaper than by train, as the routes run directly across the strait.

Bus connections with neighbouring cities on Shikoku Island, such as Takamatsu, are also well-developed. Modern express buses offer a high level of comfort, making travel along the roads of Japan pleasant and relaxing.

By Car

Travelling by car is an excellent way to enjoy the views and reach your destination in comfort. The fastest route leads from neighbouring Takamatsu: a distance of about 72 km can be covered in just 1.2 hours.

Travellers heading from Honshu Island via Okayama will have to drive about 140 km, which will take approximately 2 hours. If you are departing from Shirahama, be prepared for a longer trip: a journey of nearly 295 km will require about 3.9 hours behind the wheel.

Travel Tips

To ensure your trip to Tokushima is as comfortable as possible and leaves only pleasant impressions, it is worth preparing in advance for the local lifestyle and climate.

  1. Clothing and Essentials. Summer here is hot and humid, so choose light, natural fabrics, and be sure to bring an umbrella for the rainy season (June-July). Winters are mild, but a windbreaker or coat will be useful.
  2. Transport. The city is served by JR trains and buses, but to visit remote scenic spots (such as the Iya Valley), renting a car is most convenient.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Japanese Yen. Although cards are accepted in major hotels and shops, cash payment is often required in small shops and restaurants.
  4. Health and Safety. Tokushima is a very safe city. Tap water is safe to drink, and pharmacies are easy to find throughout the city, but bring specific medications with you if you need them.
  5. Communication. The main language is Japanese. English is understood in tourist centres and major hotels, but having an online translator with you will be extremely useful.
  6. Local Etiquette. Do not forget to remove your shoes when entering temples, traditional restaurants, and fitting rooms. Avoid loud conversations on public transport.
  7. What to Avoid. Do not leave tips; in Japan, this is not customary and may put the staff in an awkward position. Good service is already included in the bill.
  8. Additional Tip. If you plan to visit in August, book accommodation several months in advance; during the Awa Odori festival, the city is crowded with tourists.

By following these simple recommendations, you will be able to immerse yourself deeper in the region's culture and avoid minor inconveniences.
