Overview

The climate in the city of Suwa, located in Japan, is temperate and characterized by four distinct seasons. Travelers can expect significant temperature shifts throughout the year, ranging from cold winters, when average temperatures drop below freezing (for example, -2.1°C in January), to warm and humid summers, when the mercury rises above +20°C (such as +22.6°C in August).

Winter in Suwa (December–February) is quite chilly, with average temperatures around or slightly below zero. Summers (June–August) are warm and occasionally hot, especially in July and August, which also happen to be the months with the highest number of precipitation days. Spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) offer milder, more comfortable weather conditions. A characteristic feature of Suwa's climate is the relatively high number of precipitation days throughout the year, which means frequent, though not always heavy, rain, particularly noticeable during the summer period.

Temperature

The city of Suwa experiences a clear change of seasons with notable temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The coldest month is January, when the average temperature drops to -2.1°C and nightly lows can reach -5.6°C. February is also quite cold, with an average temperature of -1.0°C and minimums around -5.0°C. The hottest month is August, with average temperatures rising to 22.6°C and daytime highs reaching 26.5°C. July is also very warm, with an average temperature of 21.5°C and maximum values up to 25.3°C.

Summer months in Suwa, from June to August, are characterized by pleasant warmth. Daytime temperatures during this period typically range from 21.6°C in June to 26.5°C in August, creating comfortable conditions for outdoor activities, though nights can be cooler, with temperatures between 13.1°C and 18.7°C. Winter, on the other hand, is quite cold. From December to February, average temperatures stay around or below zero. In January and December, minimum temperatures regularly drop to -5.6°C and -3.6°C respectively, while daytime highs barely exceed the 1.4°C - 3.8°C mark.

Throughout the year, Suwa experiences significant temperature shifts between day and night. The difference between average highs and lows is approximately 7°C to 10°C. For instance, in April, the average high is +13.9°C and the low is +3.8°C. This means that even on relatively warm days, evenings and nights can be quite chilly. The transitional seasons—spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November)—are marked by gradual temperature changes: in spring, average figures rise from 4.0°C in March to 13.7°C in May, while in autumn, temperatures decline from 19.0°C in September to 6.4°C in November.

Precipitation

The city of Suwa sees distinct seasonality in its precipitation distribution throughout the year. Overall, the summer period is characterized as wetter, while winter features less precipitation. However, it's important to note that precipitation occurs to some extent in almost every month.

The heaviest rainfall occurs during the summer months. July is the wettest month, with an average of 9 mm of precipitation and up to 22 days of rain. June is also quite wet with 7 mm and about 18 rainy days. In August, about 6 mm of precipitation falls over 20 days. During the summer, precipitation mostly falls as rain.

In contrast, the winter months are the driest in Suwa. January and December record the least precipitation—around 3 mm in each of these months. Given that average temperatures in January are -2.1°C and 0.1°C in December (with maximums of 1.4°C and 3.8°C respectively), winter precipitation in these months typically falls as snow. The number of precipitation days is 14 in January and 16 in December. February is also relatively dry (4 mm, 12 days), and with an average temperature of -1.0°C, snow also predominates here. November is also characterized by low precipitation (3 mm, 12 days), but the average temperature this month is significantly higher at +6.4°C. Therefore, in November, precipitation is more likely to fall as rain or sleet; snow is possible during sudden cold snaps but is not the dominant type of precipitation as it is in January or December.

Spring (March, April, May) and autumn (September, October) months represent transitional periods. Precipitation levels during these times range from 5 to 6 mm per month, with the number of rainy days between 13 and 17. In early spring, especially in March (average temperature 4.0°C), mixed precipitation in the form of snow and rain is still possible, but as it warms up, it gives way to rain. In autumn, precipitation is also primarily rain.

Packing Tips

When planning your trip to Suwa, be prepared for changeable weather: temperatures here fluctuate significantly throughout the year, and precipitation is a frequent occurrence. The key to comfort is layering, which allows you to easily adapt to a cool morning, a warm afternoon, or a sudden shower likely in any season. Don't forget comfortable waterproof shoes: Suwa, like many Japanese cities, is perfect for exploring on foot, and there are many "wet days" all year round.

During the colder months from December to February, when average temperatures hover around freezing and can drop even lower (to -5.6°C), you'll need very warm clothing. Pack thermal underwear, fleece sweaters, an insulated windproof jacket (preferably waterproof, as there are 12 to 16 days of precipitation per month), as well as a hat, gloves, and a scarf. In early spring (March–April) and late autumn (October–November), the weather remains cool, with average temperatures ranging from 4°C to 12°C, so warm sweaters and a mid-season jacket will come in handy. Given the frequent, though not always heavy, precipitation (12–15 days per month), a reliable umbrella or raincoat is a must-have companion.

The summer months, from June to August, bring warmer weather to Suwa, with average temperatures ranging from 17°C to 22.6°C and maximums reaching 26.5°C. During this time, choose light and breathable clothing. However, don't forget about rain protection: July and August are not only the warmest but also the "wettest" months, with 20–22 days of precipitation. A light waterproof jacket or a compact umbrella should always be at hand. In May and September, the weather is also quite comfortable, but the layering principle will help with potential temperature swings. On sunny days, especially in summer, don't forget sunscreen and a hat.
