Overview

The climate of Rebun Island can be described as cool and temperate, heavily influenced by northern sea winds. You won't find the extreme temperatures typical of southern Japan here, so even at the height of summer, the weather remains mild and fresh. This makes the island an excellent destination for those who prefer comfortable coolness over sweltering heat.

There is a distinct change of seasons throughout the year. Winters are frosty and long, with average temperatures below freezing and significant precipitation, indicating frequent snowfall and high humidity. Summer arrives quite late, peaking in August when the air warms up to a comfortable average of 20.3°C. The transitional seasons—spring and autumn—are quite chilly, so travelers should plan for warm, layered clothing almost any time of year.

Temperature

The climate of Rebun Island is cool and restrained, typical of Japan's northern territories. Winter here is frosty and long: the coldest months—January and February—show an average temperature of about -4.0°C. During this period, the thermometer rarely rises above freezing even during the day, while nighttime temperatures drop to -5.7°C. Travelers planning a winter visit should prepare for consistent sub-zero temperatures and ensure they have warm, windproof clothing.

Summer on Rebun offers a refreshing escape and is perhaps the most comfortable time for active tourism. There is no sweltering heat here: the warmest month of the year is August, with an average temperature of 20.3°C and maximums barely exceeding 21.6°C. July and September also offer pleasant temperatures around +18°C. This mild, cool weather creates ideal conditions for long walks in the hills and nature observation without the risk of overheating.

A characteristic feature of the local temperature regime is the slight difference between daytime and nighttime readings. Thanks to the maritime influence, daily temperature fluctuations are minimal, often only 2–3 degrees, making the weather predictable throughout the day. Spring arrives slowly on the island, with the air warming to +9°C only by May, while autumn arrives quite quickly: by October, the temperature drops to +12°C, preparing the island for another winter.

Precipitation

Precipitation patterns on Rebun Island are closely tied to seasonal temperature changes. In winter, when temperatures drop below freezing (averaging from -2°C to -4°C), snowy weather prevails. This period is characterized by high frequency: in December and January, it can snow almost daily, as the number of precipitation days reaches 25–26 per month. Tourists planning a trip during this time should prepare for constant, though not always heavy, snowfall.

Spring and summer bring warmer weather and a shift from snow to rain. July can be considered the "driest" month of the year, with only about 8 rainy days recorded. This makes mid-summer the most favorable time for hiking and sightseeing. However, by August, the frequency of precipitation increases to 13 days, so an umbrella or raincoat may be useful even in the warm season.

Autumn is marked by a gradual increase in humidity. While rain occurs moderately often in September and October, November becomes a transitional month with a sharp jump in unsettled days (up to 22). During this time, as temperatures drop to +4°C and below, rain begins to turn into sleet and wet snow, heralding the start of a long and snowy winter.

Packing Tips

The weather on Rebun Island requires a careful approach to packing, as the climate is cool and windy even in the warmest months. The main principle for clothing is layering. In winter, when temperatures drop below freezing and snow is frequent, be sure to bring high-quality thermal underwear, warm wool sweaters, and a reliable windproof down jacket with a hood. Don't forget warm accessories: a hat, scarf, and gloves are essential for protection against piercing sea winds.

Summer here is mild and comfortable, with average temperatures around +18...+20°C, so don't expect sweltering heat. Even in July and August, you'll need long trousers, a fleece jacket, and a light windbreaker for evening strolls or cloudy days. Since Rebun is famous for its hiking trails and alpine flowers, it is crucial to have comfortable, broken-in trekking shoes with non-slip soles suitable for long walks over rugged terrain.

Given the high probability of precipitation throughout the year (the number of rainy or snowy days is high in any season), waterproof clothing will be your best friend. Instead of a regular umbrella, which may be useless in strong wind gusts, it's better to pack a high-quality raincoat or a membrane jacket. Despite the coolness, the sun can be strong, so sunscreen and sunglasses will come in handy during long outdoor walks.
