Temperature
Nikko experiences a significant annual temperature range, characteristic of its temperate climate. The coldest month is usually January, when the average temperature is about -0.7°C. During this period, minimum night temperatures can drop to -4.2°C, and daytime highs rarely rise above 2.8°C. In contrast, the heat peaks in August, which is the hottest month with an average temperature of 23.5°C. Daytime temperatures in August can reach 26.6°C, while nights remain quite warm, with minimums around 20.3°C.
Summer months in Nikko, from June to August, are characterized by pleasant warmth that can turn into heat. Average daytime temperatures during this period range from 21.7°C in June to a peak of 26.6°C in August. Nights also remain warm, especially in July and August, when temperatures rarely drop below 19-20°C, creating comfortable conditions for evening strolls. The winter period, spanning December, January, and February, brings cool and occasionally freezing weather. Average monthly temperatures during this time stay around or just below freezing. Daytime highs range from 2.8°C in January to 5.4°C in December, while night temperatures regularly drop below zero, especially in January (down to -4.2°C) and February (down to -3.6°C).
Diurnal temperature fluctuations in Nikko are noticeable throughout the year. The difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows can be quite significant, especially during the transitional seasons. For example, in April, the average maximum temperature is 14.1°C, while the average minimum is 4.9°C, a difference of more than 9 degrees. A similar pattern is observed in March, May, October, and November. In summer and winter, these fluctuations are slightly smaller but still noticeable, averaging between 6 and 8 degrees. This means that even on warm summer days, evenings can be cool, and in winter, the difference between the daytime warmth of the sun and the nighttime cold can be substantial.

Precipitation
Nikko has a fairly clear distribution of precipitation throughout the year, with a pronounced wet season in the summer months and a drier winter period. Rainfall amounts and the number of rainy days vary significantly from month to month, which is important to consider when planning your trip.
The highest amount of precipitation falls during the summer. July is the wettest month, with an average of about 10 mm of rainfall and rain recorded nearly every day—as many as 28 days. June and August are also quite rainy: June sees 8 mm of precipitation over 23 rainy days, and August sees 9 mm over 26 rainy days. September continues this trend with 8 mm of precipitation and 23 rainy days. Summer rain can be intense, which is typical for this season in Japan.
Conversely, the winter months are the driest. In January, February, and December, there are only 2 mm of precipitation each. Despite the small amounts, precipitation still occurs: there are 12 days with precipitation in January and December, and 10 days in February, which is among the lowest in the year (along with November). Given the low temperatures during these months (average -0.7°C in January, 0.4°C in February, 1.8°C in December, with minimums below zero), winter precipitation in Nikko often falls as snow, creating picturesque winter landscapes.
Spring and autumn months are transitional. In spring, from March to May, the amount of precipitation and rainy days gradually increase: from 5 mm and 15 days in March and April to 6 mm and 18 days in May. In autumn, the opposite trend is observed: after a wet September, October sees 7 mm of precipitation (19 rainy days), and in November, precipitation drops to 3 mm over 10 rainy days, signaling the start of a dry winter.

Packing Tips
When planning a trip to Nikko, it's important to choose your wardrobe carefully to stay comfortable in any weather. Comfortable walking shoes are an absolute necessity, as you'll be spending a lot of time exploring vast temple complexes and scenic nature trails. Dressing in layers will be your best ally, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, which is especially relevant in Nikko’s mountainous terrain. Regardless of the season, don't forget sunscreen and a hat, especially on sunny days in spring and summer.
If your trip falls during the colder months (December to February, as well as early spring in March or late autumn in November), prepare for chilly and sometimes freezing weather with average temperatures around or below zero and possible snow. During this time, be sure to bring warm clothing: thermal underwear, fleece jackets, and sweaters. Windproof and waterproof outerwear (a jacket or coat) is crucial, along with a hat, gloves, and a scarf. Warm socks and waterproof footwear will come in handy, especially for walking on snowy or wet paths.
For trips during the warm and humid seasons (late spring in May through early autumn in October, including summer from June to August), pack light, breathable clothing, preferably made of natural fabrics. Summer in Nikko is characterized not only by warmth (average temperatures above 20°C) but also by high humidity, with peak rainfall in July and August when the number of rainy days can be very high. Therefore, an umbrella or a light raincoat is a must-have companion. Even in the warmer months, mountain evenings can be cool, so a light jacket, cardigan, or windbreaker is worth bringing along.
