Summers (June to August) are warm and humid; average temperatures reach 24-25.5°C, especially in July and August, and a significant number of rainy days is again noted. Autumn (September to November) is characterized by a gradual drop in temperature from a warm 22°C in September to a cool 10°C in November, with a notable number of rainy days remaining.

One of the key features of the weather in Jōetsu is the high frequency of precipitation throughout most of the year, especially in winter and at the height of summer. When planning a trip to Jōetsu, it's important to consider the distinct change of seasons and the high probability of precipitation throughout the year. In winter (December to February), it is quite cold here, with average temperatures hovering around 1-4°C, often dropping below zero, and a large number of days with precipitation (up to 26 days a month), which can be in the form of snow or cold rain. Therefore, during this period, you will need a warm waterproof jacket, sweaters, thermal underwear, a hat, gloves, a scarf, and waterproof shoes. In spring (March-May), the weather gradually warms up, from cool in March (around 5.6°C) to comfortable in May (around 15.4°C); precipitation decreases, but an umbrella or a light waterproof jacket will still come in handy.

Summer in Jōetsu (June-August) is warm and humid, with average temperatures reaching 24-25.5°C. Despite the warmth, this is also a period with frequent precipitation (16-21 rainy days per month). It is recommended to bring light, breathable clothing, sunscreen, a hat, as well as an umbrella or a light raincoat. Autumn (September-November) brings a gradual cooling, from warm days in September (around 22°C) to cool days in November (around 10°C), while a high probability of rain remains. During this period, the principle of layering is also relevant: T-shirts, sweaters, a mid-season jacket, and, of course, an umbrella.

Regardless of the season, comfortable walking shoes are essential for exploring Jōetsu, as you will likely want to walk around the city and its surroundings. Given the frequent precipitation, waterproof or quick-drying shoes are a good choice. Layering your clothes will allow you to easily adapt to weather changes throughout the day, which is especially important for the transitional seasons of spring and autumn.
