Overview

The climate of Haridwar can be described as subtropical monsoon, characterized by distinct seasons and significant fluctuations in temperature and rainfall throughout the year. The city experiences hot summers, relatively cool winters, and a pronounced rainy season. Understanding these climatic features will help you choose the most comfortable time for your trip to India.

Summer in Haridwar, which lasts roughly from April to June, is characterized by high temperatures, often reaching 33-35°C, and minimal rainfall. The monsoon season arrives from July to September. During this period, temperatures remain high, but humidity increases significantly, while rainfall and the number of rainy days reach their peak, especially in July and August. Autumn, spanning October and November, brings pleasant warmth and dry weather. Winter, from December to February, offers comfortable daytime temperatures in the 18-22°C range, but nights can be quite chilly, with temperatures dropping to 6-8°C and almost no precipitation.

Temperature

The annual temperature regime in Haridwar shows significant fluctuations, highlighting clearly defined seasons. The hottest months are traditionally May and June. During this period, the average maximum temperature consistently stays around +35.1°C to +35.2°C, and the average daily temperature in June reaches nearly +30°C. Even the nights during these months remain very warm, with minimums rarely dropping below +21°C in May and +24.5°C in June. On the other hand, the coldest month of the year is January, when the average temperature is about +12.4°C. During the day, the air can warm up to a comfortable +18.5°C, but nights are quite cool, with an average minimum temperature of around +6.4°C. December is also characterized by winter coolness, with averages close to those of January (average temperature +13.7°C, minimum +7.2°C).

The summer season in Haridwar, which effectively begins as early as April and lasts through June, is marked by increasing heat. In April, the average maximum temperature reaches +33.4°C, and nights become noticeably warmer (averaging +17.6°C). In May and June, stable hot weather sets in. With the arrival of the monsoon period, which is most active in July and August, the peak heat subsides slightly: average maximum temperatures drop to +30.6°C - +31.2°C. However, due to the high humidity characteristic of this season, the perceived temperature can be quite high. Interestingly, at the height of the monsoon in July, daily temperature fluctuations become less pronounced (a difference of about 6°C between maximum and minimum) compared to drier seasons.

Autumn, spanning October and November, brings pleasant relief after the summer heat and monsoon humidity. October sees very comfortable weather with an average temperature of about +23°C (maximum up to +29°C, minimum around +16.9°C). By November, it gets cooler, with the average temperature dropping to +18.3°C. The winter months, from December to February, offer mild and pleasant weather during the daytime. Maximum temperatures range from +18.5°C in January to +22.3°C in February. However, nights during this period can be quite cold, with temperatures dropping to +6.4°C in January. The climate of Haridwar is characterized by notable daily temperature fluctuations, especially during transitional seasons (spring, autumn) and winter, when the difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows can reach 12-15°C (for example, in April the difference is more than 15°C, and in October it is about 12°C).

Precipitation

The nature of precipitation in Haridwar is clearly divided into two main periods: a long dry season and a pronounced monsoon season. For most of the year, the city receives a small amount of rainfall; however, with the arrival of the monsoon, the situation changes drastically, bringing heavy downpours and high humidity.

The rainy season in Haridwar usually falls in the summer months, peaking in July and August. These months see the highest amount of rainfall: July averages 10 mm and August 8 mm. Rain is very frequent during this period—there are about 28 rainy days in July and 27 in August. June and September are transitional months, when rainfall and rainy days are also noticeably higher than in the dry season: June sees 2 mm of rain over 11 days, and September sees 6 mm over 18 days. During this time, precipitation can be intense and prolonged, which is typical for a monsoon climate.

The dry season in Haridwar covers the period from October to May. The driest month of the year is November, when no precipitation is recorded (0 mm) and only one rainy day is registered. In the other months of this period—October, December, January, February, March, April, and May—the amount of rainfall is minimal, at only 1-2 mm per month. The number of rainy days varies: from 1-2 days in November, December, and October to 7 days in January and May. This suggests that even if precipitation does occur, it is generally very insignificant, possibly in the form of a light drizzle, especially during the winter months.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Haridwar, it's important to choose the right wardrobe considering the seasonal weather changes. Generally, light and breathable clothing made from natural fabrics like cotton or linen will be suitable for most of the year. Be sure to bring comfortable walking shoes, as you will be moving around a lot while sightseeing. The principle of layering is your best friend in Haridwar, allowing you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day, especially during transitional seasons and winter.

If your trip falls during the hot months from April to June, when temperatures can rise to +35°C, focus on the lightest possible clothing, a sun hat, sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen. During the monsoon season, from July to September, when rain is highly likely (up to 28 rainy days in July), you won't want to be without an umbrella or a light raincoat, as well as quick-drying clothes and perhaps a spare pair of shoes or waterproof sandals. Insect repellent may also come in handy during this time due to the high humidity.

From October to March, the weather becomes cooler. In October and November, it is still warm during the day, but evenings can be fresh, so a light jacket or sweater will be useful. In winter, from December to February, daytime temperatures are comfortable (around +18°C to +22°C), but nights and early mornings can be quite cold (down to +6°C). During this period, it is worth bringing warmer clothes: a fleece, a sweater, a mid-season jacket, and closed-toe shoes. Regardless of the season, don't forget a head covering for visiting temples and a scarf or shawl, which can be useful both for sun protection and for observing the dress code at religious sites.
