Overview

The climate in the Pastaza region can be described as humid and moderately warm, with remarkably stable temperatures. The weather remains comfortable throughout the year, with average air temperatures staying between +18°C and +20°C. Daytime highs typically reach +22°C to +24°C, while nights bring a pleasant freshness as temperatures drop to +14°C to +16°C. Thanks to the lack of extreme heat or cold, traveling here is enjoyable in any season.

A characteristic feature of the weather in this part of Ecuador is high cloud cover and frequent rainfall. There is virtually no distinct dry season here; rain can occur 20–30 days a month, regardless of the time of year. A slight decrease in rainy days is only observed in August and September, though precipitation is still likely. Travelers should be prepared for changeable weather and always carry a raincoat, as it is this humidity that makes the local nature incredibly lush and green.

Temperature

The climate in Pastaza is remarkably stable, typical of Ecuador's equatorial latitudes. There are virtually no sharp seasonal changes, which keeps the weather comfortable year-round. The warmest period is autumn: in September and October, the average temperature is around +19°C...+19.5°C, with daytime highs reaching +23.8°C. This is an excellent time for travel, as the air is warm enough without being sweltering.

A relative "cool" season occurs mid-year, from June to August. During these months, the average temperature drops slightly, reaching a low in July of +17.8°C. Daytime highs during this period typically reach +21.5°C...+21.7°C. These temperatures feel mild and refreshing, making a stay in the region pleasant even for those who don't handle tropical heat well.

Travelers should take note of the diurnal temperature fluctuations, which are quite noticeable in Pastaza. The difference between daytime and nighttime readings averages 7–9 degrees. While you can comfortably walk in light clothing during the day, the nights here can be fresh: temperatures regularly drop to +14°C...+15°C, and in August, they can reach a low of +13.6°C. Therefore, it is recommended to have a warm sweater or a light jacket for evening walks.

Precipitation

Precipitation in the Pastaza province falls with remarkable regularity throughout the year, so there is no clearly defined dry season. Even during the calmest periods, rain is frequent, making a quality raincoat and waterproof shoes essential for your trip.

The peak of wet weather usually occurs in the first half of the year. Statistics show that in March and May, the number of rainy days reaches its maximum—up to 30 days per month. This means it can rain almost every day, making the surrounding nature exceptionally lush and green, though it can complicate long hikes.

A relative lull occurs in late summer and early autumn. August and September are considered the most favorable months: the volume of precipitation decreases to 4–5 mm, and the number of rainy days drops to 21–23. This is the best time to visit if you want to minimize the chance of getting caught in a prolonged downpour, though it is impossible to completely rule out rain in Ecuador even during this season.

Packing Tips

When packing for a trip to Pastaza, your primary concern should be the high humidity and frequent rainfall characteristic of this Ecuadorian region almost year-round. The most important item in your wardrobe should be a high-quality raincoat, a lightweight waterproof jacket, or a poncho. Since it rains very often (up to 30 days a month in some seasons), an umbrella might be useful in town, but for nature excursions, it’s better to choose gear that leaves your hands free. Opt for synthetic, quick-drying fabrics, as cotton takes a very long time to dry in constant humidity.

Temperatures in Pastaza are quite mild and stable: daytime highs average +20...+23°C, while nights cool down to +14...+16°C. Layering is the perfect strategy here. Bring long- and short-sleeved T-shirts, as well as a fleece or a light sweater for evening walks, especially if you plan to visit in June or July when nights can be a bit cooler. In August and September, there is slightly less rain and temperatures rise a bit, but moisture protection remains essential.

Pay special attention to footwear: it should be comfortable, broken-in, and preferably waterproof. For walking on rugged terrain, trekking boots with non-slip soles are best, as trails can often be muddy. Don't forget sun protection—despite the frequent cloud cover, the equatorial sun is very intense, so sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are a must. We also recommend bringing waterproof cases for your electronics and documents to protect them from sudden downpours.
