All airlines divide children into two categories:
- children under 2 years old - infant (INF)
- children from 2 to 12 years old - child (CHD)
The ticket price is determined based on these categories.

Children under 2 years old pay only 10% of the adult fare. They are not provided with a separate seat and spend the entire journey on a parent's lap. One adult can take only one child under 2 years old with a 90% discount. If you need to transport two, the second child will have to pay 50% of the adult fare and will occupy a separate seat. As for luggage, only 10 kg is allowed for a child under 2 years old.
Children from 2 to 12 years old pay 50% of the adult ticket price, but on some special fares, the ticket may be significantly more expensive. For children over 2 years old, the same baggage restrictions apply as for adults.
When purchasing a round-trip ticket, many encounter a situation where the child turns two (or 13 years old) during the trip.
How much will the ticket cost in this case? Read a detailed answer to this question in our article about
how to save on tickets for children.
Documents for a child traveling abroad
Pay close attention to the documents
required for a child traveling abroad.
For traveling abroad, a
separate passport is required. Previously, until March 1, 2010, it was allowed to issue a passport for a parent with a child's photo pasted into it. This rule has now been canceled. However, if your passport was issued before March 1, 2010, children entered in it can still travel from the Russian Federation using the parent's passport until its expiration date.
When a child travels without parents, for example, accompanied by relatives (grandparents, aunts, etc.) or a tour group leader, in addition to a passport, a
notarized parental consent for the child's departure will be required. Consent from only one parent is sufficient. This document must specify the countries the child plans to visit and the period for which the consent is issued.
If a child travels with only one parent, consent from the second parent for departure is not required.
(Based on Article 20 of the Federal Law of August 15, 1996, No. 114-FZ “On the Procedure for Exiting the Russian Federation and Entering the Russian Federation”).
If a child flies with parents, we recommend taking a
birth certificate, or its notarized copy. This is not a mandatory document for crossing the border, but border services have the right to request it to verify the family ties between you and the child.
