Overview

Aneityum’s climate can be described as mild tropical, making it a great travel destination almost any time of year. As the southernmost island in the Vanuatu archipelago, it features comfortable weather without extreme heat. Temperatures here are remarkably stable: even in the "coolest" months, the air warms up to an average of +22°C, while during the hottest period, temperatures stay at a pleasant +26...+27°C.

Seasonality based on rainfall is clearly visible throughout the year. From January to April, the island experiences a more humid and warm season: rains occur quite frequently (up to 20-23 days per month), nourishing the local nature. From June to September, the dry season arrives, when the number of rainy days is cut in half, and the weather becomes clearer and slightly fresher—perfect for hiking.

For tourists, this means Aneityum offers "eternal summer" conditions. There is no cold weather here, and even during the rainy season, it remains warm. It is an excellent spot for those seeking a peaceful getaway surrounded by tropical nature, where the climate stays predictably pleasant year-round without sharp temperature fluctuations.

Temperature

The temperature on the island of Aneityum is remarkably stable and mild, making it an attractive destination year-round. The hottest season occurs in the first months of the year, corresponding to summer in the Southern Hemisphere. The peak of the heat is usually observed in February, when the average air temperature is around 26.6°C, with maximums reaching 27.4°C. During this period, the weather is truly warm, perfect for a relaxed holiday by the ocean.

With the arrival of the "winter" months, which last from June to September, the heat subsides slightly, giving way to more refreshing weather. The coolest month of the year is August, with an average of 22.2°C. This time is great for active travelers: the lack of exhausting heat allows you to comfortably explore the island's natural attractions without overheating.

A characteristic feature of Aneityum's climate is the minimal temperature variation throughout the day. The difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows is extremely small—often less than one and a half degrees. This means that even after sunset, the air remains almost as warm as during the day, so you will likely not need warm clothes even for evening strolls along the coast.

Precipitation

The climate on Aneityum is characterized by distinct seasonal rainfall, which occurs exclusively as rain. The wettest period falls in the first half of the year: from January to April, rain is very frequent. March holds the record for the number of rainy days, with precipitation recorded an average of 23 days per month. During this season, tourists should definitely carry an umbrella or raincoat, as the sky is often overcast.

The situation changes noticeably starting in June, when drier weather settles over the island. The period from June to September is considered the most favorable for visiting if you want to avoid frequent rain. During these months, the number of rainy days drops to a minimum—about 9–10 days—with June having the lowest frequency. Rainfall during this time is usually brief and does not interfere with vacation plans.

Toward the end of the year, starting in October and November, humidity begins to rise gradually, increasing the frequency of rain to 11–15 days per month. Although the total volume of precipitation in millimeters may seem small according to statistics, the high frequency of rainy days during the wet season creates a sense of constant humidity typical of the Vanuatu tropics.

Packing Tips

Aneityum treats travelers to a warm and comfortable climate year-round, so the basis of your wardrobe should be light items made from natural fabrics. T-shirts, shorts, loose trousers, and summer dresses made of cotton or linen are ideal for daytime walks, as the average air temperature consistently stays between 22°C and 27°C. Be sure to pack swimwear and a high-quality hat to protect yourself from the strong sun, which can be intense even on cloudy days.

Special attention should be paid to rain protection, as showers are common here. Between January and April, the number of rainy days can reach 20–23 per month, so a light raincoat or waterproof windbreaker will be your best companions. Even in the "drier" season from June to September, precipitation is possible, and evenings can be refreshing. For this time of year, we recommend bringing a light hoodie or cardigan to feel cozy when temperatures are around 22°C.

For exploring the island, choose comfortable, breathable footwear with non-slip soles suitable for long walks on uneven terrain. Also, don't forget high-SPF sunscreen (SPF 50+) and insect repellent, which will come in handy due to the high humidity. The principle of layering will allow you to adapt quickly to changing weather, whether it's a sudden tropical downpour or bright sunshine after the rain.
