History & Facts

The history of this majestic building began between 1891 and 1893, when successful entrepreneur John A. Thatcher decided to build a home for his family. Thatcher, who moved to Colorado from Pennsylvania, amassed a fortune in trade, banking, and mining, becoming one of the most significant figures in the region.

The Thatcher family lived in the mansion for 75 years, carefully preserving its atmosphere and furnishings. After the death of the last heir, Raymond C. Thatcher, in 1968, the building was donated to the city of Pueblo. Thanks to a community foundation established by the family, the mansion was transformed into a unique non-profit museum and opened its doors to the public.

In 1974, Rosemount became one of the first properties in the county to be listed on the National Register of Historic Places. Today, experts recognize it as one of the most complete surviving examples of Victorian architecture and interior design in the United States, representing a true time capsule of the late 19th century.

Time Needed

To fully appreciate the exhibits and architecture of the mansion, a visit typically requires 90 minutes to 2 hours. Tours are conducted by experienced guides whose stories provide a deeper dive into the daily life of the Thatcher family and the history of the city.

If you plan to study the artifact collection on the top floor in detail or walk around the building to admire its unique pink rhyolite exterior, it’s best to allow a full two hours for your visit. This is plenty of time to leisurely see all 37 rooms and take a look at the carriage house.

Working Hours

The museum welcomes visitors from Tuesday through Saturday. Opening hours are from 10:00 AM to 2:30 PM. The museum is closed on Sundays and Mondays. Please note that the schedule may change during the holiday season or for private events, so it is worth checking the official website before your visit.

An important consideration is that this historic building is not equipped with air conditioning. Consequently, on extremely hot days, the museum may be closed to ensure the preservation of the exhibits and the comfort of visitors. Plan your visit according to weather conditions and the latest updates on the Rosemount website.
