The history of this site as a public space began over a century ago. The city of Manistee officially acquired the land for the future beach in 1912. The Manistee North Pierhead Lighthouse holds particular historical value. The lighthouse seen today was built in 1927 and is the fourth structure to serve this critical navigation point. It is one of the few remaining lighthouses on Lake Michigan featuring its original elevated catwalk, which allowed keepers to reach the lantern safely even during severe storms.

In 2011, the city authorities took the lighthouse under their wing, purchasing it from the federal government. Today, the site is managed by the city's Historical Museum, and while interior access may be limited, it remains a vital architectural landmark of the region, highlighting the maritime heritage of the USA.

When planning a visit to Fifth Avenue Beach, it's best to set aside half a day or even a full day. This gives you enough time to enjoy swimming in the clear waters of Lake Michigan, have a barbecue in the designated area, and take a leisurely walk to the famous lighthouse along the long pier.

If your goal is simply to soak in the atmosphere or take some memorable photos at sunset, 1–2 hours will be sufficient. The evening hours are particularly beautiful here: as the sun dips below the lake's horizon, it creates the perfect setting for a romantic stroll along the boardwalk.
