The main highlight of the park is a leisurely tour of the nine historic buildings. You can step inside the Vincent House to experience the simple lifestyle of the late 19th century or visit the Parkhill School, which once served as a hub for education and community life. Don't miss the old print shop with its original 1910 press and the blacksmith shop, where craftsmen occasionally host fascinating demonstrations for groups.

For outdoor enthusiasts, the park offers 4.5 miles of hiking trails. The routes pass through dense forests and along the banks of the Neuse River, allowing you to see the unique flora of the cypress swamps. It’s an excellent spot for birdwatching and landscape photography. The visitor center also features an impressive collection of historical artifacts, including rare muskets, Smith & Wesson pistols, and personal belongings of soldiers from the Civil War era.

You can examine medical instruments in Dr. Kennedy's office or browse the goods on the shelves of the old general store, which transport you to an era before modern supermarkets. History & Facts

The town of Waynesborough was founded in 1787 and flourished as the county's administrative center for sixty years. It was a bustling place with its own taverns, shops, and a thriving trade scene. However, in 1839, the Wilmington-Weldon Railroad was built 1.5 miles away, which sealed the settlement's fate. Residents and businesses quickly moved toward the new rail hub, where the city of Goldsboro soon grew.

By the end of the Civil War in 1865, only the ruins of five warehouses remained of Waynesborough's former glory. The only authentic witness of those times still standing in its original place is the Churchill-Cogdell Cemetery. Six ancient graves, surrounded by a wrought-iron fence, preserve the memory of the people who lived here between 1846 and 1904.

The modern park was created in the 1980s as a tribute to the region's history. Although the nine historic buildings featured in the exhibition today did not stand in the original Waynesborough, each was carefully relocated from various parts of Wayne County. These structures represent an architectural chronicle of Southern life from the mid-19th to the early 20th century.

Time Needed

For a basic introduction to the park and a tour of the nine historic buildings, most visitors find 2–3 hours sufficient. This provides enough time to stop by the visitor center, explore the exhibits in the schoolhouse and print shop, and take memorable photos against the backdrop of the authentic structures.

If you plan to hike all the nature trails along the Neuse River or are attending a special event, it is better to budget half a day (about 4–5 hours). A slower pace will allow you to enjoy the tranquility of the cypress swamps and examine rare historical artifacts without rushing.
