Overview

The climate in Atlantic City is characterized as temperate, with four distinct seasons. The city experiences significant temperature fluctuations throughout the year, which is typical for the U.S. East Coast. Travelers can expect cool, and sometimes cold, winters, warm and pleasant springs, hot summers, and mild, gradually cooling autumns.

The summer months, particularly July and August, are the warmest, with average temperatures reaching 25.8°C and highs around 29.7°C. In contrast, winters are cold: in January, the average temperature is about 1.8°C, and minimum temperatures can drop below freezing. Precipitation is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year, averaging 3-4 mm per month, with 8 to 14 rainy days monthly. This means there is a chance of rain in any season, but there is no pronounced rainy season.

Temperature

Atlantic City experiences a distinct seasonal temperature regime, typical of a temperate climate influenced by the ocean. The annual temperature cycle shows significant fluctuations: from cool winters to fairly hot summers. The coldest month is traditionally January, when the average air temperature is about 1.8°C. During this period, average minimum temperatures drop to -1.8°C, and daytime highs rarely rise above 5.3°C. Conversely, the peak of summer heat occurs in July, where the average temperature reaches 25.8°C, and average daytime highs consistently hold at 29.7°C.

The summer months, spanning from June to August, are characterized by warm and sometimes hot weather in Atlantic City. The average temperature in June is 22.8°C, gradually rising to peak values in July (25.8°C) and slightly decreasing in August (24.7°C). Daytime highs during this season often fluctuate between 27°C and nearly 30°C. Nights also remain comfortably warm, with minimum temperatures ranging from 18.4°C in early summer to 22.0°C in mid-summer. The winter period, from December to February, brings cool weather. Average monthly temperatures vary from 1.8°C in the coldest month, January, to 4.5°C in December. At night, temperatures regularly drop to negative values, especially in January (averaging -1.8°C) and February (-0.3°C), creating conditions for frost. During the day, however, the thermometer usually stays above freezing.

The spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November) months in Atlantic City are transitional, with a gradual and quite noticeable change in temperature conditions. Spring sees a steady warming: from an average of 7.4°C in March, when the breath of winter is still felt, to a comfortable 17.8°C in May, heralding the arrival of summer. In autumn, the reverse process occurs: from a still-warm 21.7°C in September, the temperature gradually drops to a cooler 9.0°C in November. Diurnal temperature fluctuations throughout the year in Atlantic City can be described as moderate; the difference between the average maximum and average minimum temperature is usually between 7°C and nearly 10°C, ensuring relatively smooth temperature transitions throughout the day.

Precipitation

Precipitation occurs year-round in Atlantic City, but the total amount is quite small. There is no pronounced rainy season or prolonged dry period here. Monthly precipitation fluctuates between 2 and 4 mm, indicating that intense or prolonged rainfall is unusual for the city; instead, it tends to be frequent but very light rain or drizzle.

In winter, especially in January and February, when average temperatures hover around freezing and can drop lower (minimums down to -1.8°C in January), precipitation (around 3 mm per month) can fall as light snow or ice pellets. In spring and autumn, it is predominantly light rain. The summer months, particularly July and August, feature the highest number of rainy days — up to 14 days per month. At the same time, the total precipitation only slightly increases to 4 mm, which likely means more frequent but still faint drizzle or short-lived light showers.

The highest amount of precipitation, though small in itself (4 mm), occurs in July, August, and September. These same summer months, July and August, also lead in the number of rainy days (averaging 14 days). The "driest" month, both in terms of total volume (2 mm) and frequency (8 days), is November. Overall, residents and visitors of Atlantic City can expect precipitation approximately 8–14 days each month, but these will mostly be very moderate in intensity.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Atlantic City, it’s important to account for the changeable weather typical of this coastal city. No matter the time of year, layering will be your best ally. A light windbreaker or jacket that can be easily taken on or off will be useful even in summer due to the ocean breeze. Given that the number of rainy days ranges from 8 to 14 per month throughout the year, a compact umbrella or light raincoat is a must-have in your suitcase. And, of course, don’t forget comfortable shoes, as you’ll definitely want to stroll along the famous boardwalk or explore the city.

In the summer months (June–August), when average temperatures reach 22–25°C and highs approach 30°C, pack light, breathable clothing, swimwear, high-SPF sunscreen, and a hat for sun protection. Despite the warmth, the evening breeze can be cool, so a light cardigan or sweater will come in handy. In winter (December–February), the weather in Atlantic City is quite cold, with average temperatures around 1–4°C and the possibility of frost. You’ll need a warm waterproof jacket, sweaters, thermal wear, a hat, gloves, and a scarf. In spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), the weather is changeable, ranging from cool to moderately warm. Layering is especially relevant during these seasons: T-shirts, long-sleeves, fleece jackets, and a mid-season jacket will keep you comfortable as temperatures fluctuate from 3–7°C in the morning to 17–25°C during the day.
