Overview

The climate in Mbarara can be described as mild and comfortable tropical, without extreme temperature fluctuations. Throughout the year, the weather remains remarkably stable: average daily temperatures stay around 20–22°C, rising to 26–27°C during the day and dropping to a pleasant 16°C at night. This makes the city an attractive destination for travelers who find sweltering heat difficult to handle.

Mbarara has a clear seasonality based on rainfall rather than temperature. The year can be divided into two wet and two drier periods. The highest number of rainy days occurs in spring (March–May) and autumn (September–November), when it can rain for more than 20 days a month. During these times, Uganda's nature is particularly picturesque and green; however, tourists should make sure to pack waterproof clothing in advance.

The driest time of year is June and July, when the number of rainy days is minimal and the sun shines most often. January and February are also considered relatively dry months. Thanks to this distribution of rainfall and consistent warmth, you can plan a trip to Mbarara at almost any time, choosing a season based on your preference: sunnier or wetter and more lush.

Temperature

The climate in Mbarara is remarkably stable and mild, making the city comfortable to visit at almost any time of year. Due to its equatorial location, there are no sharp seasonal contrasts. The average monthly air temperature fluctuates within a very narrow range — from 20.2°C to 22.3°C. This means travelers won't have to face extreme heat or cold.

The peak of warmth occurs at the beginning of the year: February is usually the hottest month, with daytime highs averaging 27.4°C. During this period, the weather feels like a pleasant, non-exhausting summer. The "coolest" month is considered to be November, when daytime temperatures drop to a comfortable 24.6°C. The concept of "winter" here is very relative — even on the coldest days, the weather resembles a mild European summer.

A key feature of the local climate is the noticeable temperature drop throughout the day. While days in Mbarara are generally warm and sunny, nights bring a tangible freshness. After sunset, the thermometer consistently drops to 16–17°C throughout the year. This difference ensures a comfortable sleep and allows you to rest from the daytime warmth without the need for constant air conditioning.

Precipitation

In Mbarara, rainfall patterns have a distinct seasonality typical of Uganda's equatorial climate. There are two main rainy periods during the year. The first wet season usually lasts from March to May, while the second, more prolonged one, begins in September and continues through December. During these times, rainfall occurs regularly, refreshing the air and sustaining the region's lush greenery.

The rainiest months are April, October, and November. Statistics show that in November, it can rain for up to 23 days, while October and April see about 22 days. Travelers planning a trip during these periods are strongly advised to bring a reliable raincoat and waterproof shoes, as clear weather can quickly turn into a downpour.

If you prefer drier weather, the best time to visit is June and July. During these months, the number of days with precipitation is minimal: on average, it rains only 5–6 times a month. January and February are also relatively dry periods (about 11–12 rainy days), making the beginning and middle of the year the most comfortable for walking tours and outdoor excursions.

Packing Tips

Mbarara features a mild and pleasant climate year-round, so when packing your suitcase, focus on comfortable summer clothing. During the day, temperatures usually warm up to +25...+27°C, but nights can be quite fresh, with temperatures around +16°C. Layering is the best approach: bring T-shirts and lightweight trousers made from natural, breathable fabrics, but be sure to complement your wardrobe with a warm sweater, hoodie, or windbreaker for evening walks and early morning departures.

Pay special attention to rain protection, as showers are common here, especially in April, October, and November, when the number of rainy days exceeds twenty per month. Even if you plan your trip for the drier season (June–July), a high-quality raincoat or waterproof jacket will be much more practical than an umbrella. Also, keep in mind that the equatorial sun is intense even through clouds, so a hat, sunglasses, and SPF sunscreen are essential in any season.

For walking around the city and its surroundings, choose comfortable closed-toed shoes, such as sturdy sneakers or lightweight trekking boots that you don't mind getting dirty. Open sandals are useful for relaxing, but for active days, closed shoes are preferable. Don't forget to pack insect repellent to protect yourself, especially if you plan to be outdoors after sunset.
