Overview

The climate in Ngorongoro can be described as exceptionally mild and temperate, often compared to "eternal spring." Thanks to its location, there is no sweltering heat or extreme cold here. Throughout the year, temperatures remain remarkably stable and comfortable. Average daytime temperatures range from 19°C to 22°C, creating ideal conditions for exploring this unique region.

There are two distinct main seasons in Ngorongoro: dry and rainy. The dry season lasts roughly from June to September. During this time, there is virtually no precipitation, and days are mostly sunny and clear, making it the peak period for safaris. The rainy season, in turn, is divided into two periods: the "short rains" from October to December and the "long rains" from March to April. Despite the increase in rainy days, precipitation most often occurs in the form of short showers, after which the weather clears up again.

Temperature

The climate in Ngorongoro is remarkably stable and comfortable throughout the year. There are no sharp seasonal changes, and the average annual temperature fluctuates within a very narrow range—from 19°C in July to 21.6°C in October. This creates ideal conditions for visiting almost any time. The warmest months are February, March, and especially October, while the coolest but still very pleasant weather occurs from June to August.

During the so-called "summer" or warm period, which peaks in October, daytime air temperatures rise to 27-28°C. At the beginning of the year, from January to March, daytime highs also stay at a comfortable level of around 25-26°C. The "winter" season, occurring in June and July, can hardly be called cold. During the day, the temperature remains pleasant at around 25°C, but nights become noticeably cooler. The "coldest" month is July, with an average temperature of around 19°C and night-time lows dropping to 13°C.

A key feature of the local climate is the significant difference between day and night temperatures. After sunset, the air cools quickly, and the difference can be 10-13°C. For example, in July, the daytime high reaches 25°C, while at night the temperature drops to 13°C. This is particularly noticeable during the dry months (from June to October). Travelers should take this into account and bring warm clothing, such as a fleece or light jacket, for comfortable evening walks and morning safaris.

Precipitation

Ngorongoro experiences a distinct seasonality of precipitation, which divides the year into two main periods: dry and wet. Understanding these cycles will help you better plan your trip and choose the right clothing.

The dry season lasts from June to August, when there is almost no precipitation. During these months, especially in June, July, and August, the number of rainy days is minimal—only 2-3 days per month—and the total rainfall is zero. May and September are also very dry, making this period ideal for safaris as the weather is predictable and the roads are in good condition.

The wet season, or rainy season, spans from November to April. However, the nature of precipitation in Ngorongoro has its own characteristics. Despite a large number of rainy days, especially in January, April, and December (about 20-21 days per month), the total amount of precipitation remains quite low. The wettest months are considered to be January and December, but even then, only about 9 mm of precipitation falls. This indicates that the rain here is most often a light drizzle or short-lived showers rather than prolonged tropical thunderstorms.

Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Ngorongoro, it's important to choose your wardrobe wisely, as the weather can be deceptive. The key principle is layering. Daytime temperatures remain comfortable year-round, averaging around 20-22°C, but mornings and evenings can be quite chilly, with temperatures dropping to 13-16°C. Therefore, be sure to bring light shirts and T-shirts, as well as a warm fleece or light jacket for morning safaris and evening gatherings. Long trousers are more practical than shorts. Don't forget comfortable, sturdy closed-toe shoes, sunglasses, a hat, and high SPF sunscreen, as the sun is very strong at high altitudes.

Ngorongoro has two distinct seasons to consider when packing. The dry season lasts roughly from May to October. During this time, rain is very rare, but nights and early mornings can be especially cool. The rainy season falls between November and April, with the most rainy days occurring from December to April. Although rainfall is rarely prolonged, a light waterproof windbreaker or raincoat will be an indispensable companion. Regardless of the season, binoculars for wildlife viewing and insect repellent will come in handy.
