Imagine powerful walls made of coral stone and limestone that have towered over the lagoon's shores for more than three centuries. The Dutch Fort in Kalpitiya is a remarkable monument of colonial architecture located in the coastal town of Kalpitiya. This historical site in the country's northwest is an almost perfect square with massive bastions at its corners, which once protected vital trade routes.
Today, Sri Lanka carefully preserves this heritage. Although the fort is managed by the navy and serves as a training base, it is open to travelers. The main feature that never fails to surprise guests is the full-sized blue whale skeleton located inside. This unusual combination of military history and marine biology makes the fortress one of the most original attractions in the region.
The fortress occupies a strategic position on a sandy peninsula separating the Puttalam Lagoon and the Indian Ocean. Walking along its ramparts, you can feel the breath of the past and enjoy panoramic views that once helped control the movement of ships laden with precious cinnamon and pearls.
