The main and fastest way to reach the island is by air. Mendeleevo Airport (DEE) receives regular flights, connecting this remote territory with major regional transport hubs. Flying here offers an opportunity to view stunning panoramas of the ocean and volcanic ridges from above.
The airport is located in close proximity to the settlement, which is convenient for travellers. However, it is worth remembering that due to the specific maritime climate and frequent fogs, flight schedules may change, so it is recommended to monitor the weather forecast before departure.
There is a complete absence of railway connections in Yuzhno-Kurilsk and throughout Kunashir Island. It is impossible to get here by train, as the island is separated from the mainland and neighbouring large islands by sea straits.
The railway can only be used as part of a combined route to reach major cities with airports or seaports, from where further transfer to the Kuriles takes place.

Direct bus routes from other cities to Yuzhno-Kurilsk do not exist due to the geographical isolation of the island. The water barrier makes it impossible to use intercity bus transport to arrive at the settlement.
