Marquis of Pombal Square (Praça Marquês de Pombal) is not just a central square, but the very heart of Vila Real de Santo António, located in southern Portugal. This historic site serves as the perfect starting point for exploring this charming border town. The square is an outstanding example of Enlightenment urban planning and reflects the ambitious plan to rebuild the country after the devastating earthquake of 1755.

The square owes its creation to the influential statesman Sebastião José de Carvalho e Melo, Marquis of Pombal. Designed under his direction, it mirrors the architectural principles used in the reconstruction of Lisbon's Baixa district. An elegant obelisk, erected in 1776 in honor of King José I, rises in the center of the square. It is surrounded by perfectly symmetrical buildings in a unified style, and the entire area is covered with the famous Portuguese mosaic pavement (calçada portuguesa), creating a harmonious and impressive ensemble.
Today, Marquis of Pombal Square is a lively public space. Numerous cafes, restaurants, and shops are located under the building arcades, where you can relax with a cup of coffee, try local cuisine, or buy souvenirs. Sunny orange trees planted around the perimeter add comfort and local color to the square. It is a wonderful place to observe the leisurely life of the city, feel its unique atmosphere, and enjoy the architectural heritage of the 18th century.
