The Mafra National Palace is not just a landmark, but a true symbol of the grandeur and the Golden Age of Portugal. Located in the town of Mafra, this monumental complex in the Mature Baroque style is striking in its scale and luxury. The entire ensemble, which includes the royal palace, a basilica, and a monastery, has been rightfully included in the UNESCO World Heritage list since 2019.

The palace was built in the early 18th century by order of King John V to commemorate the birth of his first child. The construction, funded by gold from Brazil, became one of the most ambitious projects of its time. The complex was designed as a multi-functional space, uniting royal apartments, a majestic basilica, and a Franciscan monastery under one roof.
The scale of the palace is impressive: it covers an area of about 4 hectares and features approximately 1,200 rooms, over 4,700 doors and windows, and 156 staircases. Of particular note is one of the most significant and beautiful libraries in Europe, housing about 36,000 rare volumes. Thanks to its architectural scope and the richness of its interiors, the Mafra Palace is considered one of the largest and most impressive palace ensembles on the continent.
