Overview

The climate in Chitré can be described as hot and tropical, with high temperatures that remain stable throughout the year. This Panamanian city offers travelers an eternal summer atmosphere: average thermometer readings rarely drop below comfortable levels, and sudden cold snaps are practically unheard of.

The weather throughout the year is clearly divided into two main periods. The dry season, which lasts from January to March, is characterized by plenty of sunny days and a near-total absence of rainfall—it’s the most popular time to visit. Conversely, from May to November, a distinct rainy season sets in, with rain falling almost daily, bringing high humidity but no relief from the heat.

A hallmark of the local climate is the remarkable consistency of the temperature. Regardless of the month, daytime highs usually hover around +30...+33°C, while nights stay warm, at about +23...+24°C. Even during the rainiest period (October-November), it remains warm, and showers are often intense but brief, allowing you to enjoy your vacation.

Temperature

The climate in Chitré is remarkably stable: it is warm almost all year round, making the city an excellent destination for tropical lovers. The highest temperatures are observed during the dry season, which lasts from January to April. During this time, especially in March, the air warms up to an average of 33°C during the day. This is a period of real heat when there is virtually no precipitation and the sun shines brightly and intensely, creating ideal conditions for a beach holiday but requiring UV protection.

The nominal "winter," which coincides with the rainy season here (May to November), brings only a slight decrease in temperature but changes the perception of the heat due to humidity. In the "coolest" months, such as October and November, the average temperature stays at a comfortable 26–27°C. During the day, the thermometer still frequently reaches 30°C, but due to cloud cover and regular rain, the heat is a bit easier to bear than in the dry months.

Travelers should note the pleasant temperature drop between day and night. After a hot day where temperatures exceed 30 degrees, the nights bring a long-awaited freshness. After dark, the air cools to 23–24°C throughout the year. This contrast of about 6–9 degrees makes evenings in Chitré very comfortable for walking and relaxing outdoors.

Precipitation

The climate in Chitré is characterized by a clear division into dry and wet seasons, typical for this part of Panama. The beginning of the year is an ideal time for travelers who prefer clear weather. From January to March, precipitation is extremely rare: February and March are the driest months, with almost no rain and a minimal number of rainy days (from 1 to 3 days per month).

The situation begins to change in April as humidity gradually rises. The actual rainy season kicks off in May and lasts until approximately November. Peak precipitation occurs from June to October, when it rains almost every day (up to 30 rainy days a month). According to statistics, October is often the wettest month in terms of both frequency and volume of rainfall.

Despite the high frequency of rain in summer and autumn, it usually takes the form of warm tropical downpours. By the end of the year, the intensity of rainfall decreases: in December, the number of rainy days drops significantly to 17, marking the imminent transition to the dry and sunny season.

Packing Tips

Since it’s warm in Chitré year-round, your wardrobe should consist primarily of light clothing made from natural, breathable fabrics like cotton or linen. T-shirts, shorts, and loose dresses will be most comfortable in daytime temperatures that often reach 30–33°C. Be sure to bring reliable sun protection: a wide-brimmed hat, high-quality sunglasses, and high-SPF sunscreen, as the tropical sun is very intense here, even on cloudy days.

If your trip is planned for the period from May to November, be prepared for the rainy season. During these months, rain falls almost every day, so a light raincoat, a waterproof poncho, and a compact, sturdy umbrella are essential luggage items. For walking during this time, it's best to choose quick-drying shoes or water-friendly sandals, and keep a spare pair handy in case your main ones get soaked.

Evenings in the city bring a pleasant coolness when the temperature drops to 23–24°C. For evening strolls, a thin long-sleeved shirt or a light windbreaker can be useful, which also helps protect against insects. Don't forget comfortable, broken-in shoes for touring city sights, as well as insect repellent, which is particularly relevant during the wet season.
