How to get to Altay

Getting There: Introduction

The city of Altai is the administrative centre of the Govi-Altai province, located in the western part of Mongolia, serving as a gateway to rugged desert landscapes and majestic mountain ranges. It is not a bustling metropolis, but an authentic destination where travellers can experience the true nomadic lifestyle before embarking on expeditions. Getting to Altai is possible via various means, and while the journey here often becomes an adventure in itself, it grants access to the region's unique natural beauty.

By Plane

The fastest way to reach the region is via the local Altai Airport (LTI), which, contrary to outdated information, receives regular domestic flights from the country's capital. Flight schedules often depend on the season, so it is advisable to book tickets in advance to ensure a comfortable arrival directly in Altai.

Alternatively, one can consider flying to neighbouring regional hubs, such as Uliastai or Khovd, from where the journey continues by land. Although these cities are at a significant distance, such a route may be justified if direct tickets are unavailable or if there is a desire to see more of the landscapes of Mongolia.

By Train

There is no railway connection to this part of Mongolia, and there is no train station in the city of Altai itself. Tourists who prefer trains will have to choose another mode of transport, as the main lines run significantly further east.

Even the nearest major settlements, such as Uliastai and Khovd, do not have convenient rail connections for further transfers. Rail travel to this remote region is not feasible, and it is better to opt for aviation or car travel.

By Bus

The most popular and budget-friendly way to reach the city of Altai by land is a direct bus service from Ulaanbaatar. Comfortable buses usually depart from the Dragon Center bus terminal, covering a distance of about 1,000 km in 15–20 hours, allowing you to witness the change of landscapes from steppes to semi-deserts.

Despite the duration of the trip, this option is in demand among locals and tourists due to the regularity of the service. It is recommended to purchase tickets in advance, especially during the summer season, when passenger traffic in the regions of Mongolia increases significantly.

By Car

Travelling by car allows you to plan your route independently and enjoy the views: the road from the city of Uliastai will take about 4.5 hours, covering a distance of approximately 195 km. This is one of the shortest overland routes between regional centres, accessible to prepared travellers.

The journey from the city of Khovd will require a little more time — about 5 hours to cover a distance of 438 km. To navigate these routes, it is strongly recommended to rent a reliable four-wheel drive vehicle, as despite improvements in road quality, road conditions in the steppe can be unpredictable.

Travel Tips

A trip to Altai requires careful preparation due to the remoteness of the region and harsh climatic conditions. Following these recommendations will make your trip safe and memorable.

  1. Layered clothing. The weather in the steppe is changeable: it can be hot during the day and freezing at night. Be sure to bring a fleece jacket, a windproof jacket, and comfortable trekking shoes.
  2. Reliable transport. The best vehicle for moving around the region is a 4x4 Jeep or a "UAZ". Asphalt roads are not available everywhere, and dirt tracks can be a challenge for an ordinary car.
  3. Cash. Bank cards are accepted only in the city centre and large shops. Always keep a supply of local Tugriks with you, preferably in small denominations.
  4. Provisions. Distances between settlements are vast. You should always have a supply of drinking water and food in the car in case of an unforeseen stop.
  5. Communication and Navigation. Mobile internet works unstably outside the city. Download offline maps in advance and buy a SIM card from a local operator with wide coverage.
  6. Respect for traditions. When entering a yurt, do not step on the threshold and accept offerings with your right hand. These are important elements of local etiquette that show respect to the hosts.
  7. First Aid Kit. The nearest pharmacy may be far away. Assemble a basic set of medicines, including remedies for stomach upsets, painkillers, and plasters.

Observing these simple rules will help avoid practical difficulties and allow you to fully focus on the amazing nature and hospitality of Govi-Altai.
