Overview

The climate in Guanajuato can be described as moderately warm and quite pleasant throughout the year. The city is known for its relatively stable temperatures without drastic seasonal shifts, making it comfortable to visit at almost any time. Average annual temperatures stay within a comfortable range: the warmest months are April and May, with an average temperature of about 21-22°C and highs of up to 29°C, while the coolest are December and January, with average temperatures around 14.5°C and nightly lows of about 7°C.

There are two distinct seasons in Guanajuato: the dry season and the rainy season. The dry season typically lasts from November to April. During this time, the weather is mostly sunny with minimal precipitation (often 0 mm). April and May are the hottest months, immediately preceding the rains. The rainy season occurs during the summer months from June to September, bringing more frequent precipitation. July stands out with the highest number of rainy days (about 20), although total rainfall remains moderate (about 5 mm per month). Temperatures stay warm during this period, though it may feel a bit fresher due to cloud cover and humidity.

Despite the rainy season, the overall weather pattern in Guanajuato remains attractive for tourists. Even in the rainy months, precipitation most often occurs in the late afternoon or evening, leaving the mornings and early afternoons free for walking and sightseeing. The winter months from December to February offer clear, dry weather with pleasant daytime temperatures, although nights can be quite chilly, so it's worth bringing some warm clothing.

Precipitation

Guanajuato experiences a pronounced seasonality in precipitation. For most of the year, from November to April, the dry season prevails. During this period, rain is extremely rare: in January, February, March, April, and December, the average monthly rainfall is 0 mm, and the number of rainy days ranges from one to two. This makes the winter and early spring months ideal for visiting if you prefer dry weather.

The rainy season in Guanajuato usually falls in the summer months and early autumn, from May to October. Precipitation begins to increase noticeably in May (1 mm, 7 rainy days), peaking from June to September when about 5 mm of rain falls monthly. The frequency of rain also increases significantly during these months. For example, July is the wettest month in terms of rainy days—on average, there are about 20. August and September are also quite rainy, with 17 and 15 rainy days respectively.

Precipitation in the summer period likely takes the form of showers, which is typical for a subtropical highland climate. Despite the increase in rainfall, it is often short-lived. By October, rain intensity decreases (2 mm of precipitation, 8 rainy days), and by November, the city returns to dry conditions (1 mm, 3 rainy days). Snow is not typical for Guanajuato, given the average monthly temperatures.
