Overview

Cabo San Lucas boasts a primarily desert climate, which means plenty of sunshine and warm weather throughout most of the year. Average annual temperatures are very comfortable for vacationing, rarely dropping to chilly levels, making it an attractive destination year-round.

The city has two distinct seasons. A long dry season runs from late autumn to early summer (roughly November to May), when there is virtually no rain and days are filled with sun. Summer and early autumn (June to October) bring a slight increase in humidity and small amounts of precipitation, with August and September being the months with the most rainy days, though total rainfall remains low.

Overall, the weather in Cabo San Lucas is characterized by stability and predictability. Even during periods of relatively higher precipitation, rains are usually brief. The hottest months are from July to September, when average temperatures peak, but it remains warm and sunny the rest of the year, perfect for beach holidays and outdoor activities.

Temperature

Cabo San Lucas delights its visitors with year-round warmth, but temperature patterns change noticeably by season. The annual average temperature ranges from a pleasant 20.0°C in February, which is the coolest month (with an average low of 16.5°C and a high of 23.6°C), to a hot 27.7°C in August, the peak summer month, when maximum daytime temperatures can reach 30.1°C. Even "cold" months like January (average 20.4°C) and February remain very comfortable for vacationing.

The summer period, spanning June to September, is characterized by the highest temperatures. Average daytime readings in July (27.0°C), August (27.7°C), and September (27.3°C) stay firmly in the 27-28°C range, with maximums often exceeding 29-30°C. Nights also remain very warm, with minimum temperatures rarely dropping below 24-25°C (for example, 24.3°C in July, 25.4°C in August). During these months, especially August and September, there is a slight increase in rainy days, which can add a sense of humidity to the heat, creating a typical tropical atmosphere.

The winter months, from December to March, bring mild and very pleasant weather to Cabo San Lucas. Average temperatures during this period fluctuate between 20-21°C (e.g., December – 21.6°C, January – 20.4°C, March – 20.9°C). During the day, the air warms up to a comfortable 23-25°C, while nights become noticeably cooler, with temperatures around 16-18°C. For instance, in January, the average minimum is 16.8°C and the maximum is 23.9°C. It is during winter and early spring that a more pronounced difference between day and night temperatures is observed, reaching about 7-8°C, which is typical for a desert climate and provides a refreshing coolness after a warm, sunny day.

Precipitation

Precipitation in Cabo San Lucas is quite rare, which is perfectly consistent with its desert climate. Dry weather prevails for most of the year. However, two main periods can be distinguished: a long dry season and a shorter period with a slight increase in rainy days, though the total amount of precipitation remains extremely low.

The dry season in Cabo San Lucas lasts from December to May. The months from March to May are particularly arid, when, according to statistical data, there is zero rainfall and not a single rainy day is recorded. January, February, and December are also characterized by zero precipitation, although there may be one day with insignificant, barely noticeable rainfall in each of these months.

A slight increase in precipitation occurs from June to October. The peak of this "wet" season falls in August and September. September is considered the rainiest month, yet even then, the average rainfall is only about 4 mm, spread over approximately 12 days. In August, about 3 mm of rain falls over about 11 days. This means that even in the "wettest" months, rains here are usually brief and light, more like short showers than prolonged bad weather. In the other months of this period—June, July, and October—the amount of precipitation and rainy days is even lower, at about 1 mm and 2-4 rainy days.

Consequently, rainfall in Cabo San Lucas is not a significant factor that would seriously impact travel plans. The city offers plenty of sunny days year-round, and even during periods of relatively higher humidity, the chance of encountering prolonged rain is minimal.

Packing Tips

Given the delightful year-round warmth and abundance of sunshine in Cabo San Lucas, your suitcase should be filled mostly with light, breathable clothing. T-shirts, shorts, skirts, and sundresses made of natural fabrics like cotton or linen will be your best companions. Don't forget a few swimsuits, as beach holidays here are magnificent any time of year! Essential items also include a high SPF sunscreen, quality sunglasses, and a hat (wide-brimmed or a cap) for reliable protection from the bright Mexican sun. Comfortable open shoes, such as sandals or flip-flops, are ideal for the beach and leisurely strolls around town.

While the weather in Cabo San Lucas is consistently warm, there are minor seasonal nuances to consider. From June to September, when daytime temperatures peak (up to 30°C) and nights remain very warm (21-25°C), choose the lightest and loosest garments possible. During this period, especially in August and September, occasional and very brief rains are possible (averaging 3-4 mm per month), so a super-light raincoat or compact umbrella might come in handy, though they aren't strictly necessary. In the "cooler" months from December to March, daytime temperatures are comfortable (23-25°C), but evenings and nights can be fresher (around 16-18°C). Therefore, it’s recommended to bring a light jacket, sweater, cardigan, or pashmina. The principle of layering your clothes will be very useful here, allowing you to feel comfortable both under the sun and during a cool evening.

In addition to basic clothing, consider a few practical additions. A light cover-up or long-sleeved shirt will not only protect you from the intense midday sun but also keep you warm in the evening or in air-conditioned rooms. If you plan on active recreation, excursions, or long walks around Cabo San Lucas, don't forget a pair of comfortable closed-toe shoes, such as light sneakers or loafers. A small backpack or a spacious beach bag will be very useful for daily outings and storing essentials.
