The heart of the sanctuary is the "Holy House"—a small stone building which, according to centuries-old tradition, is the earthly dwelling of the Virgin Mary from Nazareth. It is believed that the Annunciation—the appearance of the Archangel Gabriel to the Virgin Mary—took place within these walls. This unique structure is essentially a "shrine within a shrine," creating a special atmosphere of reverence and spiritual power.
The Holy House itself is enclosed in a magnificent marble screen designed by the outstanding Renaissance architect Donato Bramante. On the outside, it is decorated with sculptures and bas-reliefs depicting scenes from the life of the Virgin Mary. The entire complex is not only a place for prayer and worship but also an outstanding monument of Renaissance architecture and art, housing masterpieces by famous masters.
