The Castellana Caves (Grotte di Castellana) are a true wonder of nature and one of the main attractions in southern Italy. Located near the town of Castellana Grotte, this unique complex of karst caves is considered the largest in the Puglia region. For millions of years, water worked to create an underground world of winding corridors, majestic halls, and whimsical limestone sculptures that now attract travelers from all over the world.
Descending underground, you will enter a realm of stalactites and stalagmites that capture the imagination with their shapes and sizes. The entire cave system spans several kilometers, offering visitors routes of varying lengths. Each chamber here has its own name, such as the "Black Cave" or the "Owl Cave," and a unique atmosphere. One of the most impressive spots is the White Grotto (Grotta Bianca), which is often called the most beautiful cave in the world due to the dazzling whiteness of its crystal formations.

The caves owe their birth to an ancient underground river that, over millions of years, eroded the limestone rocks formed at the bottom of a prehistoric sea. This long process of erosion created impressive underground landscapes, which were discovered by speleologist Franco Anelli only in 1938. Today, the Castellana Caves are not just a tourist site, but a living monument to our planet's geological history.
