How to get to Ancona

Getting There: Introduction

Ancona is a lively port city on the Adriatic coast, harmoniously combining the charm of antiquity with the rhythm of modern life. As the capital of the picturesque Marche region in Italy, it attracts travellers not only as a major transport hub but also as a destination with its own unique character. This city invites guests to stroll through the historic centre, enjoy panoramic views, and immerse themselves in the authentic atmosphere of the Italian coast.

By Plane

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the region is by direct flight. The city is served by its own international airport, Ancona-Falconara (AOI), named in honour of the great artist Raphael Santi. The air hub is located just 18 kilometres from the centre, allowing travellers to arrive at their hotel shortly after landing.

If a direct flight is not available, flights to airports in neighbouring cities can be considered. Popular alternatives are Rimini, located approximately 90 kilometres away, as well as Perugia and Forlì. Thanks to the developed transport system of Italy, you can get from there to the coast by train or bus, enjoying scenic views along the way.

Getting to Ancona by train is an excellent solution, as the city serves as a vital strategic hub for the Italian railways. The central station, Ancona Centrale, receives numerous trains, ensuring stable connections between the Marche region and the rest of the country. The station is located close to the centre and the port, which is particularly convenient for those planning to continue their journey by ferry.

Regular and convenient connections with major cities are well-established: it is easy to get here from Rome, Bologna, and Milan without unnecessary transfers. Travellers can choose between modern high-speed trains, which save significant time, and regional express trains. The route often runs along the picturesque sea coast, so the trip will offer not only comfort but also aesthetic pleasure from the views outside the window.

Travel Tips

A trip to Ancona will provide plenty of vivid impressions if you take into account a few local features in advance and prepare for the rhythm of life in a port city. We have compiled a list of practical recommendations to help make your journey through this picturesque corner of Italy as comfortable as possible.

  1. Clothing and Footwear. The city is located on hills, so you will have to walk up and down slopes frequently. Be sure to bring comfortable flat shoes. Summers here are hot and humid—opt for natural fabrics—while in winter and the off-season, do not forget a windproof jacket and an umbrella, as a fresh breeze often blows from the Adriatic.
  2. Transport. The historic centre is best explored on foot, but for trips to Passetto beach or the train station, it is convenient to use city buses. Tickets should be purchased in advance at tobacco shops (Tabaccheria) or newsstands and must be validated upon entering the vehicle to avoid fines.
  3. Finances. The official currency is the Euro. Bank cards are accepted almost everywhere, but cash may be required in small cafes, souvenir shops, or when buying bus tickets. It is recommended to always carry a small amount in small notes and coins.
  4. Health and Safety. Ancona is a calm city, but as in any major port, it is worth keeping a closer eye on personal belongings and documents in the areas of the train station and ferry terminals. Pharmacies are easily recognised by the sign with a green cross; their schedule usually includes a lunch break, but there are always duty pharmacies available.
  5. Language and Communication. The main language of communication is Italian. In tourist zones and hotels, staff often speak English, but away from the centre, communicating may be more difficult. Learn a few basic phrases ("buongiorno", "grazie", "per favore")—locals greatly appreciate politeness and respect for their culture.
  6. Local Etiquette. When visiting places of worship, especially the Cathedral of San Ciriaco, please observe the dress code: shoulders and knees must be covered. In restaurants, remember "coperto"—a fixed service charge for setting the table, which is automatically included in the bill and is not a tip.
  7. What to Avoid. Do not plan lunch or dinner at odd hours. Many restaurants and shops close for a siesta (approximately from 13:00 to 16:00) and open for dinner only after 19:30. Attempting to find a full meal at 5:00 PM may prove unsuccessful.
  8. Useful Tip. If you have time before your ferry, do not sit in the waiting room. Take the opportunity to climb to the old lighthouse in Cardeto Park or to the cathedral on Guasco Hill—from there, the best panoramic views of the port and sunset open up, which will become a highlight of your photo album.

Following these simple rules will help you avoid minor inconveniences and focus on the main thing—enjoying the architecture, cuisine, and atmosphere of the Marche region. We wish you a pleasant and safe journey!
