Overview

Jerusalem features a Mediterranean climate, characterized by hot, dry summers and mild, wetter winters. This means the city's weather has distinct seasonal variations that are important to consider when planning your trip.

Summer months, especially from June to September, are very warm and sunny in Jerusalem, with average temperatures reaching 28°C and sometimes higher. There is virtually no precipitation during this period. Conversely, winter brings cooler weather, with average temperatures around 12-14°C, and serves as the main rainy season, though total rainfall remains moderate. Spring and autumn are pleasant transitional seasons with comfortable temperatures and less rainfall compared to winter.

Temperature

The temperature regime in Jerusalem demonstrates clear seasonal changes, offering a variety of weather conditions throughout the year. The hottest months are typically July and August, when the average air temperature stays around 27.9-28.1°C, and daytime highs regularly rise to 33-34°C. In contrast, the coolest period occurs in January and February. During these winter months, the average temperature is about 12-13°C, with nighttime lows potentially dropping to 8-9°C.

Summer in Jerusalem, lasting from June to September, is characterized by dry heat. Daytime temperatures often exceed 30°C, peaking in July and August (up to 33.8°C), while precipitation is virtually non-existent during these months. Winter, covering December, January, and February, brings cool but not freezing weather. Average daytime temperatures range from 16°C to 19°C, and nighttime temperatures drop to 8-10°C. An important feature of Jerusalem's climate is the significant daily temperature fluctuations, especially in the spring, summer, and autumn months. The difference between daytime highs and nighttime lows can reach 10-12°C, so even after a hot day, the evening can bring a pleasant coolness.

Precipitation

Jerusalem experiences distinct seasonality in the distribution of precipitation throughout the year. The city has a clear wet season, occurring primarily in the winter months, and a long dry summer period. Spring and autumn serve as transitional seasons with a gradual change in rainfall levels.

The bulk of Jerusalem's precipitation falls between November and March. The wettest month, both in terms of total rainfall (3 mm) and the number of rainy days (averaging 12), is January. February is also characterized by higher humidity, bringing about 2 mm of rainfall and approximately 11 rainy days. December follows with 2 mm of precipitation and 8 rainy days, while November and March are characterized by about 1 mm of rainfall and 8 rainy days each. The type of precipitation during these months is predominantly rain, which, judging by the low total amounts, is most often light to moderate in intensity.

The summer months in Jerusalem, spanning from May to October, are characterized by extremely low rainfall or its complete absence. July, August, and September are absolutely dry—no measurable precipitation is recorded during this time, and the number of rainy days is zero. In May, June, and October, there is also no rainfall (0 mm), although 1 to 3 so-called "wet days" may be recorded. This likely indicates days with very insignificant, possibly drizzly precipitation that does not reach 1 mm, or high cloud cover. Therefore, when planning a trip to Jerusalem for the summer months, you can highly expect sunny weather without rain.

Packing Tips

When packing for Jerusalem, it is important to consider its diverse climate to ensure your trip is as comfortable as possible. Regardless of the time of year, comfortable walking shoes are your primary companion, as the city involves long walks over hilly terrain and cobblestones. Sunscreen, sunglasses, and a hat are essential almost year-round, especially during the summer months when the sun is very strong. Given the significant daily temperature fluctuations, particularly in spring and autumn, as well as the difference between outdoor temperatures and air-conditioned spaces, layering your clothes is highly recommended. Also, remember to bring modest clothing (covering shoulders and knees) for visiting the numerous holy sites.

In summer, from May to September, when Jerusalem experiences hot and dry weather with average highs reaching 29-34°C and almost a complete lack of precipitation, your wardrobe should consist of light, breathable clothing made from natural fabrics. T-shirts, shorts, sundresses, and light trousers are ideal choices. However, even during the hot season, a light sweater or shawl will be useful for evening walks when temperatures might drop slightly, or for visiting air-conditioned venues. In winter, from December to February, the weather becomes cool (average temperatures around 12-14.5°C, with lows reaching 8-10°C) and wetter, with the highest number of rainy days (up to 12 in January). During this period, you will need warm items: sweaters, fleeces, a jacket (preferably waterproof or water-repellent, as precipitation up to 3 mm is possible), warm trousers, and an umbrella.

Spring (March-April) and autumn (October-November) months in Jerusalem are characterized by pleasant but changeable weather. Layering is particularly important during these times. It can be quite warm during the day (average temperatures ranging from 15°C in March to 23°C in October), but evenings can be chilly. Bring both light T-shirts and long-sleeved shirts, jeans or trousers, and a light jacket or sweater. Although there is less precipitation during these periods than in winter (about 1 mm in March, April, and November, and virtually none in October), a small folding umbrella or a light waterproof windbreaker may come in handy, especially in March and November when the number of rainy days is still noticeable (about 8 days).
