If you are coming from Adisutjipto Airport, the drive takes about 20 minutes.

The history of this space began in 2019. The initiative was led by the government and aimed to solve two problems at once: creating a rainwater retention pond (embung) and organizing a modern cultural hub in the southern part of the city. During the first phase, the infrastructure foundations were laid, including a reservoir with a capacity of over 9,000 cubic meters.

The project developed in stages and was funded through the Dana Keistimewaan (Special Region Funds). In 2023, active construction began on key facilities—the amphitheater and exhibition halls. The architects sought to harmoniously integrate the new buildings into the landscape, respecting height restrictions so as not to block views of the historical monuments in neighboring Kotagede.

The official opening of "Embung Giwangan Cultural Park" took place on May 23, 2025. The opening ceremony was led by the Governor of the Special Region of Yogyakarta, Sri Sultan Hamengkubuwono X. The signing of a commemorative plaque in the Grha Budaya auditorium marked the park's transformation into a major center for preserving traditions and developing the region's creative industries.

For a standard tour of the grounds and a walk around the central pond, 1–1.5 hours is usually sufficient. This time is enough to enjoy the architecture, take photos, and appreciate the scale of the artificial lake.

However, if you plan to attend one of the cultural shows at the amphitheater or visit an art exhibition, we recommend setting aside about 3 hours for your visit. On weekends, when fairs or festivals are held, you can easily spend half a day in the park, combining outdoor relaxation with exploring local art.

The park is open to visitors on weekdays: Monday to Friday from 09:00 to 19:00. Please note that the site is usually closed for general admission on Saturdays and Sundays, unless special cultural events or festivals are scheduled for those days.
