How to get to Kendari

Picturesque Kendari, situated on the coast of Sulawesi island, is not merely an administrative centre but a hospitable gateway to the world of Indonesia's amazing nature. This city attracts travellers with its convenient location around a beautiful bay and serves as an important transport hub for exploring the region. Here, you can not only prepare for further adventures but also enjoy the local atmosphere, savour fresh seafood, and appreciate the skill of artisans creating unique items from silver.

The fastest and most comfortable way to reach the region is to take a flight to Haluoleo Airport (KDI). This air hub is a key transport node, serving over a million passengers annually and connecting Southeast Sulawesi with the country's major transit centres.

Although other arrival points can be found on the map, for example, in Pomalaa or Baubau, they are located at a significant distance, so a direct flight to Kendari remains unrivalled in terms of time and convenience. The airport possesses the necessary infrastructure and has good transport links with central districts, allowing travellers to quickly reach their accommodation.

Direct railway connection to the city of Kendari is absent, as the rail network on Sulawesi island is underdeveloped and does not yet reach this region. There are no stations here, so the train is not considered a method to reach the capital of the Southeast Sulawesi province.

Neighbouring settlements, such as Pomalaa or Baubau, also lack railway infrastructure. To travel around this part of Indonesia, tourists are recommended to use domestic flights or the developed system of sea ferries.

Travelling by bus or local "travel" (comfortable shared minivans) is an excellent way to get to the city of Kendari while enjoying views of Indonesia. One of the most popular and short routes leads from Pomalaa: the road, about 160 kilometres long, takes on average 3–4 hours, passing through green hills and picturesque coastal zones.

For those departing from more remote points, the trip turns into a real adventure. The journey from Palopo can take from 10 to 12 hours, often including a ferry crossing over the Gulf of Bone, which significantly reduces the detour by land. Connections with the city of Baubau are also combined: the route implies the use of a ferry, and the total travel time, covering about 200 kilometres by sea and land, is usually around 7–8 hours.

A trip by car is a chance to see corners of the island hidden from tourists' eyes and plan stops independently. The most comfortable and fastest route to Kendari runs from the town of Pomalaa: a distance of about 173 kilometres can be covered in approximately 4 hours, enjoying views of tropical nature. Renting a car with a driver or a taxi here is a common practice, but it is better to agree on the cost of the trip in advance, using average regional rates as a guide.

For lovers of long road trips, the road from the city of Palopo will be a challenge, stretching over 630 kilometres and requiring almost 14 hours of continuous driving. The route from Baubau, despite a significantly shorter distance of 227 kilometres, will take more than 12 hours due to the peculiarities of local relief and logistics. Such trips allow for a deeper immersion into the atmosphere of Sulawesi, however, they require patience and endurance from travellers.

Careful preparation for a trip to Kendari will help you avoid minor inconveniences and fully concentrate on exploring the beauties of Southeast Sulawesi. To ensure your holiday in this part of the country is as comfortable and safe as possible, we have compiled a list of the most important practical recommendations.

1. Clothing and belongings. The climate here is equatorial, hot and humid year-round. Bring loose clothing made of natural breathable fabrics (cotton, linen). Do not forget a raincoat, as tropical downpours can start suddenly. Considering that Indonesia is a country with strong traditions, for walks around the city it is better to choose items that cover shoulders and knees, especially when visiting non-tourist districts.
2. Transport. Public transport ("pete-pete" minivans) might seem confusing for a newcomer. The most convenient way to get around is using mobile apps to book a taxi or motorcycle taxi (Grab or Gojek). This saves you from having to bargain and explain the route with gestures. You can also rent a scooter, but only if you have an international driving license and experience driving in Asian traffic.
3. Finances. The official currency is the Indonesian Rupiah (IDR). Bank cards are accepted in hotels and large supermarkets, but for payments in local shops, markets, and transport, you will definitely need cash. It is better to exchange money at banks or official Money Changers, avoiding street exchangers.
4. Health and safety. Never drink tap water—buy only bottled water. Since the region is tropical, be sure to use mosquito repellents to protect against dengue fever. Pharmacies (Apotek) are available in the city, but it is better to carry a basic medicine kit, including remedies for stomach upsets and antiseptics.
5. Communication. The main language is Indonesian (Bahasa Indonesia). English is understood by hotel and airport staff, but it is not widely spoken in the city. We recommend downloading an offline translator package to your phone in advance or learning a few basic phrases, for example, "Terima kasih" (Thank you)—this is very well received by locals.
6. Local etiquette. Indonesians are very welcoming and polite. When handing over money or objects, use only the right hand (the left is considered "unclean"). When entering a private home or a mosque, be sure to remove your shoes. It is customary to greet with a light handshake, sometimes placing the hand on the heart afterwards.
7. What to avoid. Do not express feelings loudly in public (hugs and kisses are best left for private settings). Avoid discussing political topics or criticising religion. Also, be careful when crossing roads: pedestrian crossings here are often ignored by drivers.
8. Extra tip. The city is famous for its silver masters. Be sure to visit craft shops to see the famous "Kendari Werk" filigree technique. This silver lace will be a unique and authentic souvenir that is difficult to find in other regions.
