Overview

The climate in Imatra can be described as temperate continental, with four distinct seasons. The city experiences warm but not hot summers and cold, snowy winters. Spring and autumn are transitional periods with more changeable weather.

The summer months, from June to August, offer the most comfortable temperatures for visiting: average values hover around 16-18°C, while maximums can reach 20-21°C. Winter, spanning from December to March, is characterized by steady sub-zero temperatures. January and February are the coldest months, with an average temperature of about -5.5°C, creating excellent conditions for winter recreation if such activities are popular in the region.

As for precipitation, it is distributed fairly evenly throughout the year in Imatra, with a slight peak in the summer months, particularly in July and August (around 3 mm). Despite the low absolute monthly precipitation values (1-3 mm), the number of days with precipitation is quite significant (ranging from 9 to 16 days per month). This suggests that light precipitation (rain in summer or snow in winter) can be a frequent occurrence, so it's worth being prepared for changeable weather.

The coldest months are traditionally January and February, when the average temperature stays around -5.5°C, and night frosts can reach -7.5°C and -7.8°C respectively. Nights remain relatively cool, with temperatures around +12.1°C to +14.3°C. The difference between day and night temperatures in summer can be quite noticeable, around 6-8 degrees. May also brings significant warming with an average temperature of +10.1°C, but with notable fluctuations between day (+14.6°C) and night (+5.6°C).

Precipitation

In Imatra, there is a relatively even distribution of precipitation throughout the year, with no pronounced rainy or dry season in terms of total volume. Precipitation amounts are generally low, ranging from 1 to 3 mm per month. However, the frequency of precipitation days varies, indicating periods with more frequent, though light, precipitation.

The winter months, especially January and December, are characterized by the highest number of precipitation days—averaging 16 days each. During this time, as well as in February and often in March and November, precipitation falls mainly as snow, consistent with the sub-zero average temperatures. Snowfall is usually light but frequent, given the low overall amount of precipitation in millimeters.

Despite this, heavy downpours are not typical for Imatra; rather, it is light or moderate rain. Packing Tips

When planning a trip to Imatra, it's important to consider the changeable Finnish weather. The key principle for packing is layering, which allows you to easily adapt to temperature changes throughout the day. Regardless of the season, comfortable waterproof walking shoes will be your best companion, as precipitation occurs quite often in Imatra, even if it's not heavy (averaging 2-3 mm per month, but with 9 to 16 rainy or snowy days).

In winter (December to March), it's cold in Imatra; average temperatures range from -2.7°C to -5.5°C, and night frosts can reach -7.8°C. Therefore, be sure to bring very warm clothing: thermal underwear, fleece tops, warm sweaters, a winter jacket (preferably wind- and waterproof), a hat, scarf, and gloves. In summer (June to August), the weather is much milder, with average temperatures from 16.2°C to 17.9°C and highs reaching 21.4°C. For this period, light trousers, shorts, and t-shirts are suitable, but don't forget to pack a light jacket or sweater for cool evenings or in case of rain. Sunscreen and a hat will also come in handy on sunny summer days.

In autumn, the temperature gradually drops from 11.9°C in September to 5.7°C in October, while November already heralds winter with an average temperature of about 0.9°C. For these seasons, a combination of warm layers and lighter clothing is ideal: a waterproof jacket, jumpers, cardigans, and long-sleeved t-shirts. A small folding umbrella or a raincoat will be useful year-round, given the number of days with precipitation.
