Metu boasts a unique subequatorial climate, largely shaped by its location in the highlands of western Ethiopia. Thanks to its altitude of about 1,300–1,500 meters above sea level, there is no sweltering heat, and the weather remains quite comfortable throughout the year with average temperatures around 22–24°C.

The annual cycle in this region is clearly divided into dry and rainy seasons. The period from November to March is characterized by clear skies and minimal precipitation, making it a popular time to visit. Meanwhile, transitional rains begin in April, gradually giving way to the main wet season, when the region's landscape is transformed into rich shades of green.

A special feature of the local climate is its stability: there are no major temperature fluctuations throughout the year, allowing you to plan a trip in almost any month, provided you take the rainfall schedule into account.

The temperature regime in Metu is remarkably consistent, though there can be noticeable contrasts within a single day. Traditionally, the hottest months are February, March, and April. During this time, daytime highs often reach +29–33°C, but thanks to the low humidity of the dry season, this weather is quite tolerable.

During the period of heavy rains from June to October, daytime air temperatures become more moderate and fresh, dropping to a pleasant +22–24°C. This time of year is often called "eternal May" due to the abundance of greenery and mild warmth. July is considered the coolest month, with average daytime temperatures staying around +22°C.

It is important to consider diurnal temperature fluctuations. Even after a very warm day, nights in Ethiopia bring a long-awaited coolness: the thermometer can drop to +13–15°C. This temperature range requires warm clothing for evening relaxation and early morning excursions.

The distribution of precipitation in Metu is influenced by monsoons, creating a distinct seasonality. The main rainy season lasts from June to September. During this period, downpours can be intense and prolonged, with July and August considered the wettest months, when it rains almost daily, filling local rivers and waterfalls with life-giving power.

There are also periods of so-called "short rains" occurring in April-May and October-November. At this time, precipitation is more episodic, often occurring in the afternoon as short but vigorous thunderstorms. Annual rainfall here is significantly higher than the national average, due to the specific features of western Ethiopia's terrain.

The driest time of year is from December to March. In January, rain is exceptionally rare, and the number of clear days reaches its peak. This is an ideal time for those who want to avoid high humidity and enjoy long walks under cloudless skies.

When packing your suitcase for Metu, prioritize the principle of layering. Lightweight clothing made of natural fabrics like cotton or linen is ideal for daytime walks under the bright Ethiopian sun. However, be sure to bring a sweater or a light jacket, as it gets noticeably chilly in the highlands after sunset.

If your trip is planned for the period from April to October, your gear should definitely include a reliable raincoat or a compact umbrella, as well as quick-drying clothes. Given the hilly terrain, an important item is closed-toe shoes with good tread to ensure comfort when walking on wet ground.

Regardless of the season, do not forget sunscreen, sunglasses, and a wide-brimmed hat—at this altitude, UV radiation is much more aggressive. An insect repellent and a reusable water bottle will also be useful accessories to stay hydrated during active excursions.
