Overview

The climate in Tortuguero can be described as classic humid tropical. Eternal summer reigns here, and the weather is remarkably stable: no sharp temperature fluctuations are observed throughout the year. Thanks to its proximity to the Caribbean Sea and dense rainforests, the air is always warm and humid, creating ideal conditions for lush exotic vegetation.

Temperatures remain comfortable every month: averages range from 24–27°C. During the day, the air often warms up to 29°C, especially in May and September, while nights bring a pleasant freshness, though the mercury rarely drops below 22°C. This makes Tortuguero an excellent year-round destination if you love warmth.

A key feature of the local climate is the high probability of precipitation. Rain is frequent here—occurring between 23 and 31 days per month—so the concept of a "dry season" is quite relative. Even in relatively less rainy months like February and April, be prepared for brief downpours. However, it is precisely because of these rains that Costa Rica's nature in this region remains so picturesque and green.

Temperature

The climate in Tortuguero is remarkably stable: eternal tropical summer reigns here, and there are virtually no sharp temperature fluctuations throughout the year. The hottest months are traditionally May and September, when average daytime temperatures peak, reaching 29.4°C. During this period, the air warms up as much as possible, creating the true tropical heat typical of Costa Rica's Caribbean coast.

The concept of "winter" in this region is quite relative and has nothing to do with cold. Even in the "coolest" months of the year—January and February—the average temperature stays at a comfortable 24.5°C. During this time, daytime maximums rarely exceed 27°C, offering travelers mild and pleasant warmth without exhausting heat, ideal for long excursions through the canals and jungle.

Daily temperature fluctuations in Tortuguero are also minimal and predictable. The difference between the daytime high and nighttime low is usually only 4–5 degrees. Even in the middle of the night, the temperature almost never drops below 22°C. These warm, "velvet" nights allow you to feel comfortable in light clothing around the clock, enjoying the sounds of nature without the need for extra layers.

Precipitation

The climate in Tortuguero is characterized by high humidity and frequent precipitation year-round, which is typical for Costa Rica's rainforests. It is difficult to single out a completely dry season, as rain falls regularly, sustaining the region's lush vegetation. Precipitation occurs exclusively as rain, often in the form of warm tropical downpours.

The wettest period occurs in the second half of the year. From June through December, the number of rainy days reaches its peak—about 30–31 days per month. The highest rainfall volumes are observed in November (14 mm) and June (13 mm), so travelers planning a trip during this time will definitely need a reliable raincoat.

A relative lull occurs at the beginning of the year. The "driest" months are considered to be February, March, and April, when average precipitation levels drop to 4 mm. However, even during this period, rain occurs frequently: statistics show between 23 and 27 rainy days per month, which should be considered when planning excursions through the canals and the national park.

Packing Tips

Given the warm and humid tropical climate of Tortuguero, the main principle for packing should be lightweight and quick-drying materials. Temperatures stay consistently comfortable between +24°C and +27°C year-round, so you won't need warm clothing. Opt for synthetic breathable fabrics that wick away moisture well, as heavy cotton items can take a very long time to dry in high humidity. Be sure to bring enough T-shirts, light long trousers for protection against insects and branches in the jungle, and shorts.

Since precipitation occurs almost every month (statistics show 23 to 31 rainy days per month), high-quality rain protection is the most important item on your list. Instead of an umbrella, which will be inconvenient during boat tours and forest walks, it's better to choose a reliable raincoat or a waterproof poncho. As for footwear, closed trekking boots with non-slip soles or even light rubber boots are ideal for hiking the national park trails, while comfortable sandals are perfect for relaxing at the lodge.

Don't forget protection from the intense tropical sun and local fauna. High-factor sunscreen, a sun hat, and sunglasses are necessary even in cloudy weather. Since Tortuguero is set among canals and dense vegetation, be sure to pack an effective mosquito repellent. It is also highly recommended to bring a dry bag to protect your camera, phone, and documents from water splashes during boat transfers.
